Syria forces unleash deadly assault on Damascus

Syrian forces backed by helicopter gunships and tanks launched a deadly assault on parts of Damascus on Wednesday, activists said, as the regime battles to stamp out rebel resistance in the capital.

At least 37 people were reported killed in Damascus alone, a day after a top minister hinted that the embattled regime was ready to discuss President Bashar al-Assad's exit in any talks on ending the brutal 17-month conflict.

Fighter jets and artillery hit Aleppo and heavy shelling was reported in Daraa, the birthplace of the uprising, and the eastern town of Deir Ezzor while rebels claimed they seized parts of a town on the Iraq border, a watchdog said.

The army attacked several areas where anti-regime sentiment is strong in and around the southwest of Damascus, including heavy shelling, helicopter fire and mass arrest sweeps, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

In the deadliest operation, the army raided the southwestern district of Kafr Sousa, killing at least 24 civilians, it said, while a pro-opposition journalist was also killed during a raid on his home in Damascus.

"The shelling is random, and shabiha (pro-regime militiamen) are moving freely through the district," an activist who identified herself as Alexia told AFP via Skype, adding that fearful residents were trapped in their homes.

The violence, which erupted a day after dozens of people were reported killed during a funeral in a Damascus suburb and others summarily executed, was some of the worst since regime forces reclaimed most of the capital a month ago.

As the fighting raged, the United States and France again pushed for Assad to stand down quickly after a top Syrian official said Damascus was ready to discuss his exit as part of a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

"As far as his resignation goes -- making the resignation itself a condition for holding dialogue means that you will never be able to reach this dialogue," Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said in Moscow.

But he added: "Any problems can be discussed during negotiations. We are even ready to discuss this issue."

Moscow, however, bluntly told the West not to meddle in Syria after US President Barack Obama hinted at possible military action if Damascus resorted to its chemical weapons arsenal.

"There should be no interference from the outside," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after his talks with Jamil. "The only thing that foreign players should do is create conditions for the start of dialogue."

But Washington was unimpressed by the apparent overture from Damascus.

"We still believe that the faster Assad goes, the more chance there is to quickly move on to the day after," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, dismissing Jamil's comments as "nothing terribly new".

At least 84 people were killed nationwide Wednesday, according to the Observatory, which says a total of over 23,000 people died since the uprising began in March 2011.

The army claimed to have retaken most of Damascus in late July, after some two weeks of intense fighting across the southern belt. Most rebel Free Syrian Army fighters were forced out into the nearby countryside, but have since resumed some hit-and-run operations, activists say.

In Aleppo, fighter jets struck near a missile depot, and shelled several other areas of the city that has become the key battleground since fighting first erupted there a month ago, the Observatory said.

It also said rebel fighters had seized an intelligence office and checkpoints in the eastern town of Albu Kamal on the Iraqi border, although regime forces remained largely in control.

At least 11 civilians were also killed in Daraa in the far south.

The Observatory has a network of activists on the ground but its claims cannot be independently verified.

Syrian forces appear to be increasingly resorting to attacks from the air, particularly in the Aleppo area as rebels continue to put up stiff resistance despite the regime's far superior military might.

An FSA commander said Tuesday the rebels now controlled 60 percent of Aleppo, but a security source in Damascus dismissed the claims.

The United Nations puts the death toll at 17,000 and says hundreds of thousands more have fled to Syria's neighbours while another 2.5 million still in the country are in desperate need of aid.

The conflict has spilled over again into neighbouring Lebanon, with nine dead in clashes that first erupted late Monday between pro- and anti-Damascus regime supporters in the northern port city of Tripoli.

"As the crisis in Syria continues to deteriorate, the situation in Lebanon has become more precarious and the need for continued international support to the government and the Lebanese armed forces increasingly important," said UN under secretary general Jeffrey Feltman.

The international community has struggled to end the Syria conflict in the face of divisions between the West and Damascus's traditional allies in Moscow and Beijing.

Political sources in Damascus said Jamil was sent to Moscow to discuss a possible plan for a presidential election in which all candidates would be allowed to stand, including Assad.

Obama had put Assad's regime on notice Monday that although he had not ordered military action "at this point," Washington would regard any recourse by Damascus to its chemical arsenal as crossing a "red line."

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault meanwhile said there was no question of Paris becoming directly involved in military action without UN backing but acknowledged his country was providing rebels with "non-lethal" military aid.

The West has refused to arm the rebels -- at least openly -- but weekend press reports said British and German spies were also helping them.

Bucket List & Beyond: 6 Gag-Worthy Travel Writing Clich?s ...

As much as I like travel, I dislike most travel writing. Publishing is easy these days, and that allows a lot of hacks to get their voices heard. You get lots of overwritten descriptions and ludicrous praise, all leaning on the same old?clich?s.

Many decent writers have compiled lists of travel writing clich?s. They?re poked fun at them, skewered them, begged other writers to just please stop. But new ones abound! These are some of the latest I?ve spotted floating in the travel writing toilet.

Staycation ? The first time I saw this, it was a clever commentary on an American economy that made it hard for many people to travel. Now it?s just a tool for hospitality-industry marketing stooges to entice people in a given city to take advantage of some sort of deal at their properties. Take Phoenix: It has no leisure travel during the summer, so hotels chirp about discounted ?staycations? to put swimsuit-clad butts into their pools. And now the travel writing industry is continues to ride it hard.

Bucket list ? A movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson inflicted this morbid phrase on us. Now it?s ubiquitous as ?My Big Fat Greek (Whatever). Not only is it a sign of a creatively bankrupt writer, but it?s also a great excuse to procrastinate. Instead of a bucket list, make yourself a ?next trip? list. It?s far more motivating. And you won?t sound like another wooly voice bleating about your bucket list.

Explore ? I shudder everytime a travel article exhorts me to ?explore? a destination. Look, I don?t care how remote or off the beaten path you travel: If it has signs posted or a travel article about it, someone else discovered, explored, mapped and catalogued it. Not you. ?Explore? is a slab of self-aggrandizement marinated in ego. You?re not Admiral Byrd or Sir Edmund Hillary. Get over it.

Top/Best/Most Lists ? I?m guilty of making lists. And I?ll own up to using Top/Best/Most/Whatever. But then I realized something: There is no legit way to quantify the best of anything. You might be able to get away with most popular, best attended ? or something like that if you have the data. Otherwise, just tell me about 10 great glacier hikes or your 5 favorite themed hotel or 7 overnight hikes I shouldn?t miss.

Savvy traveler ? Google this term. You?ll get 217,000 results. ?Savvy? means you?re in your comfort zone. Put me anywhere in Asia, and I am not savvy. I?ll get by. But I?ll stumble and bumble and gain some humility. You can?t earn that perspective when you?re in a place that allows you to be ?savvy.? And another thing: No travel article can make you savvy ? only going somewhere, getting lost, digging your way out and connecting with the place will make you have a clue.

Guilty pleasures ? I hate the idea that anyone should conceal what makes them happy for fear of being judged. That defines a guilty pleasure: ?If my hipster fans find out I?d rather listen to old Warrant ballads than The Antlers, they won?t think I?m smart and cool.? Bollocks to them, then. If you love going to Las Vegas or going on cruises ? well, you and I probably won?t be travel buddies. But that?s OK ? there are all sorts of destinations and activities for all kinds of people. Go have fun and don?t worry about what I or anyone else thinks about it. Well, unless you?re making your bucket list and checking it twice ?

Territorial tensions flare between China and Japan

Chinese join in anti-Japanese protests over disputed islands
BEIJING -- Angry Chinese youths on Sunday overturned cars and smashed shop windows in anti-Japanese protests across the country stemming from a long-standing dispute over uninhabited islands claimed by both countries.

Meanwhile, 150 Japanese activists tried to land on the islands by boat Sunday to commemorate World War II deaths. When that failed, 10 of them swam to one of the rocky islands and tried to plant a Japanese flag.

The demonstrations in China were the largest since 2010 when a Chinese fishing captain who had rammed a Japanese coast guard vessel was arrested, leading to a protracted standoff.

The largest street protest was in Shenzhen, where thousands of people, mostly students, overturned Japanese-made police cars and smashed the windows of Japanese restaurants. Demonstrations also took place over the weekend in Chengdu, Xian and Jinan, among other Chinese cities, as well as in Hong Kong. Japanese chain stores like Uniqlo, which are wildly popular among young Chinese, were forced to close for the day.

?Japanese, get off of our Diaoyu Islands," read most of the banners, while others exhorted Chinese to ?kill all the Japanese.?

Photographs that circulated on Chinese microblogs during the day showed a young man with a metal pipe destroying a Honda police car. Another showed a demonstrator in an anti-Japanese T-shirt taking photographs -- with a Canon single-lens reflex camera. Canon is a Japanese company.

The Chinese government had periodically?allowed anti-Japanese demonstrations, as though giving youth an opportunity to let off steam while displaying their patriot fervor. But the protests are usually kept under enough control to prevent serious casualties or property damage.

This time, the tit-for-tat displays of nationalism began when a group of Hong Kong activists landed on the same islands Aug. 15, asserting China?s territorial claim. Trying to avoid a repeat of the 2010 fishing boat incident, Japan released the Hong Kong activists within 48 hours.

The Chinese foreign ministry complained Sunday about the landing of the Japanese activists, but issued an otherwise mild reproof.

"The Japanese side should properly handle the current issue and avoid seriously damaging the overall situation of China-Japan relations," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.

Editorials in the state media have also urged restraint.

The day of protests and counter-protests comes amid a flare-up of disputes throughout Asian waters. China also has territorial disputes with Vietnam and the Philippines over the South China Sea, while squabbling has also resumed between Japan and Korea.

Psychologists link emotion to vividness of perception and creation of vivid memories

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Have you ever wondered why you can remember things from long ago as if they happened yesterday, yet sometimes can't recall what you ate for dinner last night? According to a new study led by psychologists at the University of Toronto, it's because how much something means to you actually influences how you see it as well as how vividly you can recall it later.

"We've discovered that we see things that are emotionally arousing with greater clarity than those that are more mundane," says Rebecca Todd, a postdoctoral fellow in U of T's Department of Psychology and lead author of the study published recently in the Journal of Neuroscience. "Whether they're positive -- for example, a first kiss, the birth of a child, winning an award -- or negative, such as traumatic events, breakups, or a painful and humiliating childhood moment that we all carry with us, the effect is the same."

"What's more, we found that how vividly we perceive something in the first place predicts how vividly we will remember it later on," says Todd. "We call this 'emotionally enhanced vividness' and it is like the flash of a flashbub that illuminates an event as it's captured for memory."

By studying brain activity, Todd, psychology professor Adam Anderson and other colleagues at U of T, along with researchers at the University of Manchester and the University of California, San Diego found that the part of the brain responsible for tagging the emotional or motivational importance of things according to one's own past experience -- the amygdala -- is more active when looking at images that are rated as vivid. This increased activation in turn influences activity in both the visual cortex, enhancing activity linked to seeing objects, and in the posterior insula, a region that integrates sensations from the body.

"The experience of more vivid perception of emotionally important images seems to come from a combination of enhanced seeing and gut feeling driven by amygdala calculations of how emotionally arousing an event is," says Todd.

The researchers began by measuring the subjective experience of the vividness of perception. Taking pictures of scenes that were emotionally arousing and negative (scenes of violence or mutilation, or sharks and snakes baring their teeth), emotionally arousing and positive (mostly mild erotica), and neutral scenes (such as people on an escalator), they overlaid the images with varying amounts of "visual noise," which looked like the snow one would see on an old television screen. The pictures were then shown to study participants who were asked to say whether each image had the same, more, or less noise than a standard image with a fixed amount of noise.

"We found that while people were good at rating how much noise was on the picture relative to a standard, they consistently rated pictures that were emotionally arousing as less noisy than neutral pictures regardless of the actual level of noise," says Todd. "When a picture was rated as less noisy, then they actually saw the picture underneath more clearly, as if there is more signal relative to noise in the emotionally arousing picture. The subjective meaning of a picture actually influenced how clearly the participants saw it."

The researchers used additional tests to rule out other explanations of their findings, such as how 'noisy' a picture seems due to less vibrant colours or a more complex scene. They also used eye-tracking measures to eliminate the possibility that people look at emotionally arousing images differently, causing them to rate some as more vivid.

"We next wanted to see if this finding of emotionally enhanced vividness influenced memory vividness," says Todd. "So, in two different studies, we measured memory for the images, both right after seeing them in the first place and one week later."

In the first study, 45 minutes after they did the noise task, participants were asked to write down all the details they could about pictures they remembered seeing. How much detail they remembered was a measure of vividness. In the second study, participants were shown the pictures again one week later and asked if they remembered them and, if so, how vividly they remembered them from very vague to very detailed.

"Both studies found that pictures that were rated higher in emotionally enhanced vividness were remembered more vividly," says Todd.

Finally, the researchers used brain imaging measures to look at when the brain responded to emotionally enhanced vividness and what regions of the brain responded. Using electrophysiology (EEG) to measure the timing of activity in the cortex to see when the brain is sensitive to vividness, gave them a sense of whether this subjective vividness was more about seeing vividly, or thinking that it was more vivid when you're considering it after the fact.

"We found that the brain indexes vividness pretty quickly -- about a 5th of a second after seeing a picture, which suggests it's about seeing and not just thinking," says Todd. "Emotion alters activity in the visual cortex, which in turn influences how we see."

The investigators also used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to look at what brain regions were more active when people look at things that they perceive as more vivid because they're emotionally important. Again, they found amygdala, visual cortex, and interoceptive cortex activity went up with increased vividness.

"We know now why people perceive emotional events so vividly -- and thus how vividly they will remember them -- and what regions of the brain are involved," says Todd. "Knowing that there are going to be differences among people as to how strongly they show this emotionally enhanced vividness and the strength of the brain activation patterns underlying them, could be useful in predicting an individual's vulnerability to trauma, including intrusive memories experienced by people with post-traumatic stress disorder."

Funding for the research was provided by the U.S. National Institute for Mental Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Published: 2011-07-08 | ISBN: 0520269594, 0520269586 | PDF | 312 pages | 3 MB

Over the last three decades, migration from Mexico to the United States has moved beyond the borderlands to diverse communities across the country, with the most striking transformations in American suburbs and small towns. This study explores the challenges encountered by Mexican families as they endeavor to find their place in the U.S. by focusing on Kennett Square, a small farming village in Pennsylvania known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World." In a highly readable account based on extensive fieldwork among Mexican migrants and their American neighbors, Debra Lattanzi Shutika explores the issues of belonging and displacement that are central concerns for residents in communities that have become new destinations for Mexican settlement. Beyond the Borderlands also completes the circle of migration by following migrant families as they return to their hometown in Mexico, providing an illuminating perspective of the tenuous lives of Mexicans residing in, but not fully part of, two worlds.
