A TSA Agent Has Been Stealing iPads from Passenger Luggage [Tsa]

Here's another awful thing to add to your oft updated list of why the TSA is terrible: a TSA baggage inspector has been charged with theft by a public servant for stealing eight iPads (on different occasions) from passenger luggage at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. More »

Vatican and Oxford libraries scan ancient works, let scholars stay in their armchairs

Two of the world's most hallowed libraries are about to get even quieter, having been given $3 million to go with the flow and put some of their oldest collections online. The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library will together offer up 1.5 million pages of hoary text, including Gutenberg's Latin Bible from the 15th Century, a 1,200-year-old Hebrew codex called the "Sifra," and enough Greek philosophy to make even Homer seem succinct. At the end of a five-year flatbed scanner marathon, these digital copies will be accessible to speakers of dead languages everywhere, and hopefully for less than sacrilegious prices.

Apps Have Got Your Back

circle-of-6Who needs governments? The ongoing trend toward mobile, social and crowdsourcing apps has led to a wealth of new community-based resources that support or supplant traditional civic and government services. Think Kickstarter instead of the NEA or Canada Council. Or consider the new Circle of 6 app, which is intended to help prevent violence before it happens, by letting users reach out to friends when dicey situations arise, instead of calling 911 after they get out of hand. Circle of 6 is the brainchild of health educator Deb Levine and anti-violence activist Nancy Schwartzman, who have found that it's often easier for people to reach out for help via a screen, and that it's important for groups of friends to offer concrete strategies for supporting each other. It's already won the White House's Apps Against Abuse challenge, and racked up tens of thousands of iPhone downloads. "We are working to get the app in the hands of Android users as soon as possible," says lead developer Christine Corbett Moran (an astrophysicist with a double-major Physics/CS degree from MIT, who develops apps in her copious spare time.) Apps like Circle of 6 are the thin edge of a really interesting wedge.

Kim Kardashian in Lingerie: Instagramed!

Indeed, Kim Kardashian is once again posing in lingerie and sharing it with the world, this time because she's shilling for some meal delivery company called Sunfare. Kim lies claims she lost 10 pounds in 10 days by following its sugar-free, gluten-free guidelines.

Incredibly, she's actually wearing more layers here than she did a few weeks ago when she posted a different photo on Twitter. Kardashian, of kourse, went topless in that one.

Latest Legends installment, Dark Legends, released on Android and Google Chrome

Android Central

First there was Pocket Legends, then came Star Legends. Today sees the latest MMORPG effort from Spacetime Studios, Dark Legends, released into the Google Play Store. It also stakes the claim to be the first game of its kind to launch simultaneously mobile and desktop versions. It is also available in the Google Chrome store, on Mac, PC and Linux.

The Legends series has become a huge smash hit worldwide, with over 7 million downloads of the first two games. If you've played either Pocket or Star Legends -- and there's a good chance you have -- then you'll feel right at home. New players can sign in with email, or via Facebook, and existing Spacetime account holders can just sign right in and play.
