Sony?s new CEO Kazuo Hirai sketched out a strategy to revive the technology giant?s fortunes Thursday, including a big push into the smartphone business, growth in games and digital imaging, and big cost cuts in a TV business that has not made a profit in eight years.

Sony?s strategic shift also included news of planned layoffs, which had been widely reported earlier this week. The Japanese company said it will cut 10,000 jobs, or about 6 percent of its global workforce.

Hirai, in his first public briefing since taking up the CEO position, also said the electronics retailer will expand its business in emerging markets and medical equipment. He also set a target for group sales of 8.5 trillion yen ($105 billion) in two years, with an operating margin of more than 5 percent. Earlier this week Sony said its loss for the latest fiscal year would be its worst ever -- $6.4 billion.

Hirai took over from Howard Stringer this month, and he is under pressure to turn around an ailing consumer electronics giant weakened by losses in its TV unit and by fierce competition from consumer technology rivals Apple and Samsung Electronics.

?I am determined to transform and revive Sony. This is our only chance to change,? Hirai told a news conference at Sony?s Tokyo headquarters.

Should Taylor Swift And One Direction's Harry Styles Date?

Fans had very strong reactions when MTV News reported about the rumored couple.

Are Taylor Swift and One Direction's Harry Styles a couple? They're not talking — but you certainly are.

On Wednesday, we posted some compelling evidence that Swift and Styles might be linked up (Exhibit A: This video, in which 1D rib their bandmate about Taylor during an MTV News interview), and fans certainly had their opinions on the potential pair.

Many readers chalked it up to one more dude caught in the Taylor Swift rumor mill. "I think it's time to stop the Taylor Swift likes whoever nonsense," BrianC6234 wrote in the MTV News comments section. "First of all, why does it matter? But even if you care, these rumors have all been false. Isn't she dating that guy from 'Les Miserables'? I mean Zac Efron. Wait, no, it's Tim Tebow. Get the point?"

"These rumors have always been wrong," WeeRu chimed in. "Chord Overstreet, that guy from Parachute, Zac Efron and now Harry Styles? I don't think so."

RachV2389 added: "Guy after guy. Well ... she hasn't had a song about a British boy yet!"

A lot of Taylor fans out there are hopeless romantics, just like their idol, and have their fingers crossed that the One Direction heartthrob is "The One" for Swift. "Harry is a good guy," xLara_Stylesx wrote. "If you watch all his videos you will see that he has a good personality. And Taylor deserves a boyfriend like him (:"

"I love them both," mrs.worldwide said. "It would be nice if they were together." (BTW, should we get started on the joint nickname? We're thinking Haylor or Swiftles.)

But it wasn't all roses and sunshine: Some short-and-not-so-sweet reactions to the news included "SWEET BABY JESUS NO" and "no, please no!"

"Heeeck no," Stephanie Lynn Roberts posted on MTV News' Facebook page. "Harry has class. TSwift would just break up with him to get a new hit song."

Some fans pointed out the age difference between the 18-year-old boy bander and 22-year-old country superstar. "Come on, Taylor, the kid is only 18," Ariela M. Garcia wrote, which prompted Facebook user Holly McQuithey to point out Styles' 32-year-old ex. "Harry dated Caroline Flack. There is no age limit for that boy. Let him be happy."

But one reader, MinkenGjerald, really made us laugh with their reason the couple will never work: "Well... no.. Harry is a sex bomb and Taylor is so innocent."

Amanda Bynes Has Been "Lost" For Years, Friends Say

Amanda Bynes' DUI arrest Friday has left those close to her scratching their heads.

Yesterday, her dad denied she was drunk during the incident, in which she side-swiped a cop and ended up in jail on suspicion of DUI. Now friends are weighing in.

"This DUI was definitely just a serious lapse in judgment," a friend tells People. "She hit a wall personally and professionally [in '08]. I think she's been a little lost since."

Another source, who calls Bynes "a very sweet girl," says, "[She] was raised in the industry, so she has kind of a twisted head space in terms of social groups."

An Amanda Bynes Picture

But according to the 26-year-old's father, Rick Bynes, his daughter doesn't drink. He tells PEOPLE she was held in jail because "she was upset and very emotional."

Another source says Bynes "seemed fine to drive" when she left the Standard Hotel in W. Hollywood, where she is a regular and had dinner Thursday before her arrest.

She had alcohol, but "never seemed drunk," the source says.

Bynes then went to Greystone Manor (where she's also a regular), and was arrested after leaving there. After being released from jail, she went back to party again.

Adds the source: "Bynes tried to come back to party [at the Standard] only hours after she was released from her DUI arrest," but she is no longer welcome.

Probably for the best. Whatever happened, time to dial it back.

Study blames ocean CO2 for oyster declines

Warren, File)

Scientists are blaming slightly higher levels of carbon dioxide in Pacific Ocean waters linked to global warming for the failure of oyster larvae to survive in an Oregon hatchery.

They say higher acidity of the water that comes with more carbon dioxide makes it harder for young oysters to form their shells, dooming them in a matter of days, even if they are moved to more favorable environments.

"A lot of studies talk about the year 2050 when ocean acidification becomes a problem," for sea life, said lead author Alan Barton, production manager at the Whiskey Creek Shellfish Hatchery on Netarts Bay. "It showed up five years ago for us," and almost put the hatchery out of business.

The study appeared Tuesday in the online edition of the journal Limnology and Oceanography.

"The predicted rise of atmospheric CO2 in the next two to three decades may push oyster larval growth past the break-even point in terms of production," study co-author Burke Hales, professor of biogeochemical oceanography at Oregon State University, said in a statement.

The study represents some of the first research taking the issue out of the laboratory and putting it into the natural environment, said Annaliese Hettinger, a doctoral candidate at the University of California at Davis Bodega Lab, who did not take part in the study.

"This is a good example of industry coming together with scientists to come up with potential solutions to the environmental problems we are facing in this area," she said.

Hatcheries and oyster farms relying on natural reproduction started having trouble with larvae survival in 2005, said Barton. At Whiskey Creek, which raises larvae from Pacific and kumamoto oysters that originally come from Japan, they began noticing a correlation between times when ocean upwelling was strong and larvae die-offs.

"One day all the larvae in the hatchery was dead," he said. "It was right in the middle of a big upwelling event. That's when the light went on for us. We needed to start looking at the water chemistry."

Ocean upwelling is a phenomenon on the West Coast triggered by north winds that cause waters from the bottom to rise to the top, bringing with them nutrients that feed the whole food web. Those deep ocean waters have always been more acidic than surface waters. When rising carbon dioxide levels in surface water combined with the deep ocean water, it pushed conditions past the point where oyster larvae could survive, the study found.

Oyster larvae start to form their shells from a form of calcium carbonate called aragonite, said Chris Langdon, a professor of fisheries at Oregon State University who runs the shellfish broodstock program at Hatfield Marine Science Center and took part in the study. Once they stop swimming and attach themselves to a rock or oyster shell, they switch to a tougher form known as calcite that is less vulnerable to acid levels. But by then it is too late.

"It looks like to us that they are the most sensitive in the first 48 hours," said Hales. "If we can just get them over that hump, then they are a lot less sensitive to subsequent variations."

It appears that larvae just don't have the energy to properly form their shells under higher acid conditions, Langdon said.

Hales said the good news is that if hatcheries can manage their water supply to reduce the acidity, either by changing the times they take water from the ocean, or by adding neutralizing chemicals, they will have better larvae survival. However, oysters reproducing in the wild will have a harder time.

Murder charge brought in Trayvon Martin case

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Amid furious public pressure to make an arrest in the killing of Trayvon Martin, the special prosecutor on the case went for the maximum Wednesday, bringing a second-degree murder charge against the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot the unarmed black teenager.

George Zimmerman, 28, was jailed in Sanford ? the site of the shooting Feb. 26 that set off a nationwide debate over racial profiling and self-defense ? on charges that carry a minimum of 25 years in prison and a maximum sentence that could put him in prison for life.

In announcing the arrest, prosecutor Angela Corey would not discuss how she reconciled the conflicting accounts of what happened or explain how she arrived at the charges, saying too much information had been made public already. But she made it clear she was not influenced by the uproar over the past six weeks.

"We do not prosecute by public pressure or by petition. We prosecute based on the facts on any given case as well as the laws of the state of Florida," Corey said.

Martin's parents, who were in Washington when the announcement came, expressed relief over the decision to prosecute the killer of their 17-year-old son.

"The question I would really like to ask him is, if he could look into Trayvon's eyes and see how innocent he was, would he have then pulled the trigger? Or would he have just let him go on home?" said his father, Tracy Martin.

Many legal experts had expected the prosecutor to opt for the lesser charge of manslaughter, which usually carries 15 years behind bars and covers reckless or negligent killings, rather than second-degree murder, which involves a killing that results from a "depraved" disregard for human life.

The most severe homicide charge, first-degree murder, is subject to the death penalty in Florida and requires premeditation ? something that all sides agreed was not present in this case.

"I predicted manslaughter, so I'm a little surprised," said Michael Seigel, a former federal prosecutor who now teaches law at the University of Florida. "But she has more facts than I do."

Zimmerman's new attorney, Mark O'Mara, said Zimmerman will plead not guilty and will invoke Florida's powerful "stand your ground" law, which gives people wide leeway to use deadly force without having to retreat in the face of danger.

The lawyer asked that people not jump to conclusions about his client's guilt and said he is "hoping that the community will calm down" now that charges have been filed.

"I'm expecting a lot of work and hopefully justice in the end," O'Mara said.

Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother Hispanic, turned himself in earlier in the day and will make a court appearance as early as Thursday, when his lawyer plans to ask for bail.

Corey's decision followed an extraordinary 45-day campaign by Martin's parents to have Zimmerman arrested despite his claim that he shot in self-defense. They were joined by civil rights activists such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, as well as many politicians and supporters in Sanford and cities across the nation.

Protesters wore hooded sweatshirts like the one Martin had on. And the debate reached all the way to the White House, where President Barack Obama observed last month: "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon."

The confrontation took place in a gated community where Martin was staying with his father and his father's fianc?e. Martin was walking back in the rain from a convenience store when Zimmerman spotted him and called 911. He followed Martin despite being told not to by a police dispatcher, and the two got into a struggle.

Zimmerman told police Martin punched him in the nose, knocking him down, and then began banging Zimmerman's head on the sidewalk. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in fear for his life.

A judge could dismiss the charge based on "stand your ground," legal experts said. But not if prosecutors can show Zimmerman was to blame.

"If you're the aggressor, you're not protected by this law," said Carey Haughwout, public defender in Palm Beach County.

Zimmerman's brother Robert Zimmerman told CNN on Wednesday night: "Our brother literally had to save his life by taking a life. And that's a situation nobody wants to be in, ever."

On Tuesday, Zimmerman's former lawyers portrayed him as erratic and in precarious mental condition. O'Mara, who signed on after Zimmerman's previous attorneys withdrew, said that Zimmerman seemed to be in a good state of mind but that the pressure had weighed mightily on him.

"He is troubled by everything that has happened. I cannot imagine living in George Zimmerman's shoes for the past number of weeks. Because he has been at the focus of a lot of anger, and maybe confusion and maybe some hatred, and that has to be difficult," the attorney said.

O'Mara also said the difficult case is compounded by the heavy media attention, which might make it hard to seat an impartial jury. Corey, similarly, complained: "So much information got released on this case that never should have been released. We have to protect this prosecution and this investigation for Trayvon, for George Zimmerman."

Corey, the prosecutor in Jacksonville, was appointed to handle the case by Republican Gov. Rick Scott after the local prosecutor disqualified himself. She has tried hundreds of homicide cases and is known for tough tactics aimed at locking up criminals for a long time and making it difficult to negotiate light plea bargains.

The U.S. Justice Department's civil rights division is conducting its own investigation. But federal authorities typically wait until a state prosecution is complete before deciding how to proceed.

Tensions had risen in recent days in Sanford, a town of 50,000 outside Orlando. Someone shot up an unoccupied police car Tuesday as it sat outside the neighborhood where Martin was killed. But as the hour of the prosecutor's announcement neared, the Martin family and their lawyer pleaded for calm.

Outside Sanford City Hall, Stacy Davis, a black woman, said she was glad to see Zimmerman under arrest.

"It's not a black or white thing for me. It's a right or wrong thing. He needed to be arrested," she said. "I'm happy because maybe that boy can get some rest."

4 Online Marketing Strategy Tips For Offline Businesses To Keep In ...

?

Internet marketing is a vey powerful tool that almost every offline business can benefit from. It helps you reach customers you would not reach through your regular marketing avenues. This can help you improve your image, increase interest in your business, and increase traffic to your business.

Most offline business owners think that small business Internet marketing is primarily about having a website for customers to go to. This certainly is one thing that you would want your business to have.

However, there are other things that should go into an Internet marketing strategy besides having a website. These should be considered when developing a marketing strategy to get your business online.

Let?s talk about 4 things to keep in mind that can help you be successful in marketing on the Internet when you have an offline business.

1. What is your message? In all of the Internet marketing you do you must have a clear message you are conveying to your audience.

The great thing about Internet marketing is you can adjust your message much quicker than you could in the past with direct mail, yellow pages, or even newspaper ads.

You are going to be reaching a potentially larger audience. If you do local marketing you still can reach thousands of people a day. Think about what your message is and how you can deliver it in the clearest possible way.

2. Who is your audience? You should know everything about your potential customers you are going to be marketing to. This includes understanding what their needs and problems are and how you can help solve those.

3. What are your marketing options? Besides a website you will want to build an email list you can follow up effectively with prospects and customers. Email marketing is one of the true advantages that Internet marketing provides over offline marketing.

4. Think social media. This is the biggest change that has happened in the past five years.

Social media includes blogging, online videos, article marketing, and social networking. You should have a blog that you can update for prospects to read.

Google owns You Tube so it is a good idea to create online videos there. You should also set up a Facebook business page and a Twitter account as a way to keep in touch with customers through social networking.

Internet marketing is not as complicated as offline businesses make it out to be. However, there is more to it than just throwing up a website. Follow these online marketing tips for online businesses and watch your business benefit from them!

Bobby Petrino fired at Arkansas after 4 seasons

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas fired coach Bobby Petrino on Tuesday, saying he engaged in reckless behavior that included hiring his mistress and then intentionally misleading his bosses about everything from their relationship to her presence at the motorcycle accident that ultimately cost him his job.

"He made the decision to mislead the public, (and it) adversely affected the university and the football program," athletic director Jeff Long said at an evening news conference, choking up at one point as he discussed telling players the news. There was a "pattern of misleading and manipulative behavior to deceive me."

It was a stunning fall for Petrino, who had built Arkansas into a Southeastern Conference and national power over four seasons, including a 21-5 record the past two years. But Long made it clear that the success on the field was overshadowed by a laundry list of deceptive acts.

The 51-year-old Petrino was injured in an April 1 motorcycle accident. He was put on paid leave last week after admitting he lied about the presence of the 25-year-old employee, Jessica Dorrell, who had been riding with him.

Long said his investigation, which took less than a week, found that Petrino had even given Dorrell $20,000 at one point, though he wouldn't disclose what it was for. He also said Petrino was fired "with cause" -- meaning he will not receive a multimillion-dollar buyout -- and there were no discussions about ways to keep Petrino at Arkansas.

Petrino finishes his tenure at Arkansas with a 34-17 record in four seasons, leading the Razorbacks to a No. 5 final ranking last season and a Cotton Bowl win over Kansas State.

He did not immediately issue a statement.

The accident left him with four broken ribs, a cracked vertebra in his neck and numerous abrasions on his face. The avid motorcycle rider said the sun and wind caused him to lose control on the windy two-lane highway, about 20 miles southeast of Fayetteville.

What the married father of four failed to mention, both at a news conference and to Long, was the presence of a Dorrell, a former Arkansas volleyball player and Razorback Foundation fundraiser who Petrino had hired to a football-department position just days before the accident.

That revelation was made public when the state police released the accident report. Petrino informed Long of Dorrell's presence 20 minutes before the police released the report to the public, also admitting to what he called a previous inappropriate relationship with Dorrell.

Long placed Petrino on paid leave later that night, saying he was disappointed in Petrino and promising to review the coach's conduct. He said his review found that the relationship between the two had lasted a "significant" amount of time.

As the review continued, the state police released the audio of the 911 call reporting Petrino's accident. It revealed Petrino didn't want to call police following the crash, and a subsequent police report showed he asked police if he was required to give the name of the passenger during the accident.

Petrino was forthcoming about Dorrell's name and presence with police, but only after misleading both Long and the public during his news conference. That led to the school releasing a statement from Petrino's family the day after the accident that said "no other individuals" were involved.

The proved not to be the case and the fracture in trust, along with questions about Dorrell's hiring by Petrino to be the school's student-athlete development coordinator, proved to be too much for Petrino to overcome in Long's eyes.

Petrino took the school to its first BCS bowl game following the 2010 season, losing in the Sugar Bowl to Ohio State, and improved his win total in every year. Arkansas was 5-7 his first season in 2008, 8-5 the second before finishing 10-3 and 11-2 during his last two seasons.

The coach's tenure with the Razorbacks began under a cloud of national second-guessing following his departure from Atlanta 13 games into the 2007 season. His tenure with the Falcons was the shortest for a non-interim coach since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

His departure was so sudden that Petrino left farewell notes in the lockers of the Atlanta players rather than telling them of his resignation in person. He was introduced later that night as the new coach of the Razorbacks, carrying with him a vagabond image after holding 15 jobs for 11 different programs/organizations in 24 seasons.
