Refusal to hold referendum further undermines Ireland's negotiating ...

  • Strong case set out for debt relief by Finance Committee in Berlin, undermined by Taoiseach?s comments in Davos
  • Refusal to hold referendum further undermines Ireland?s negotiating position in seeking debt relief

In a statement, Richard Boyd Barrett, TD for the People Before Profit Alliance and Finance spokesperson for the United Left Alliance, has said that Taoiseach, Enda Kenny?s comments at last weeks Davos World Economic Forum and the government?s attempts to avoid a referendum on the proposed Eurocompac Treaty, had completely undermined the robust case for debt relief made by a cross-party delegation from the Dail Finance Committee during their visit to the German Bundestag in the same week.

Deputy Boyd Barrett, along with representatives of all the other party groups on the Dail Finance Committee, met with the Budgetary Committee of the Bundestag ? the most powerful parliamentary committee in the German Parliament. The Bundestag Budgetary Committee has significant oversight over the German budget. It is also the body that had seen parts of the Irish budget before the Irish parliament saw it, and is the body which is currently involved in scrutinizing drafts of the proposed Eurocompac Treaty on behalf of the Bundestag. The Finance Committee delegation made a strong case to the Bundestag that austerity was unjustly punishing ordinary Irish citizens, who bore no responsibility for the economic crisis, and was crippling the Irish economy. Deputy Boyd Barrett said also that the Bundestag committee members were particularly interested in the question of whether there would be a referendum on the Eurocompac Treaty in Ireland and that it was clear from this that such a possibility strengthened Ireland?s hand in seeking debt relief.

Richard Boyd Barrett said: ?The Taoiseach?s comments in Davos presented a perspective on the Irish economic crisis almost diametrically the opposite of that presented by an all-party delegation from the Dail?s finance committee to the German parliament, and completely undermined the strong case that we made for debt relief. All of us, regardless of our political differences, put strong arguments to the Bundestag budgetary committee about the injustice of ordinary Irish citizens paying for the illegitimate debts of the financial institutions, and on that basis called for debt relief. The Taoiseach?s comments were, therefore, not simply insulting to ordinary Irish citizens, they did a grave disservice to the efforts, even members of his own coalition were making in Berlin, to seek debt relief for Ireland.

Despite the major political differences that exist between us, a cross section of the parties in the Dail made the case that in Ireland there is a huge sense of justified anger about having to pay debts generated by the irresponsible gambling of financial institutions across Europe and the incompetence of political leaders. We explained that the austerity policies that resulted from this intolerable debt burden were causing immense suffering across Irish society and were seriously detrimental to efforts to restore growth and create jobs. Even government spokespeople were quite robust about the need to for relief or write-down of banking debt. The social democrats and leftist groups in the Bundestag were extremely sympathetic to the case we were making, but even the governing Christian Democrats were willing to acknowledge that the austerity was unfairly hitting citizens who had no responsibility for the financial and economic crash. The message across the board of the delegation was that it wasn?t ordinary citizens that caused the mess, it was the financial and political elites both at home and in Europe that had caused the crisis, and that steps should be taken to relieve people from an unjust debt burden and the resulting austerity.?

?Our arguments ? which were gaining a sympathetic hearing from across the German political spectrum ? were totally undermined by Enda Kenny?s comments that the Irish people were to blame for the crisis in Ireland. His comments have done a major disservice to the Irish public and even to members of his own coalition. It was also clear from our meetings in Berlin that the German government is very concerned about the possibility of a referendum in Ireland on the Eurocompac treaty. It was obvious from this, that we have leverage in Europe when we call for debt relief. But again, Enda Kenny?s insistence that he won?t hold a referendum unless he is legally forced to amounts to giving away all our bargaining chips when it comes to seeking debt relief and better deal from Europe. Enda Kenny simply could not be doing a worse job in representing the interests of ordinary Irish citizens than he has done over the last number of weeks. It gives a real insight into the disastrous bankruptcy of this government?s entire strategy when it comes to dealing with an unprecedented economic crisis.?

Judges skeptical of Texas in redistricting case (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The three federal judges who will decide whether the Texas Legislature's new Republican-friendly voting maps violate the Voting Rights Act expressed skepticism Tuesday about one of the state's core arguments.

John Hughes, a lawyer for Texas, which is seeking to keep the maps in place, said during closing arguments before a Washington federal court panel that the maps were the result of legal, partisan gerrymandering that didn't violate federal law. He argued that "a decision based on partisanship" is not based on race, even if it results in minority voters having less political influence.

"Political motivation is not evidence of racially discriminatory intent," he said.

All three judges expressed doubt about that line of reasoning, with presiding judge Rosemary Collyer making clear she wasn't swayed.

"It's really hard to explain (changes to the map) other than doing it on the basis of reducing minority votes," she said.

Judge Thomas Griffith also pressed Hughes: "Doesn't the law require map makers to look at the consequences?"

The Justice Department and a coalition of minority groups contend the legislative and congressional maps the Texas Legislature drew up last year recut districts in a way meant to dilute the state's burgeoning minority voting population. They say the maps violate a section of the Voting Rights Act that requires Texas and eight other mostly southern states with a history of racially discriminatory voting practices to get so-called "pre-clearance" from the Justice Department before making electoral changes.

Timothy Mellett, a Justice Department lawyer, argued Tuesday that the federal government believes there is overwhelming evidence the new maps would reduce minority voting clout, and that the burden should be on the state to prove racial motives weren't taken into consideration.

He also portrayed the state as unwilling to give a full account of how the maps were drawn, saying the state's claim that nearly all decisions were made at the staff level with minimal input from elected officials was simply not credible.

"The fate of the congressional delegation, 100 plus lawmakers, is being decided ... and (Gerardo) Interiano is a lone wolf?" Mellett said, referring to the Texas House's top redistricting staffer. "I find that implausible."

The Justice Department and the state were each given an hour each to make closing arguments Tuesday. Each of the minority groups was given 15 minutes to address the court. Their closing arguments were scheduled for later on Tuesday.

The federal panel in Washington hadn't indicated when it might rule in the case. In addition to two weeks of testimony, each side submitted thousands of pages of documents as additional evidence and each will be filing additional legal briefs to the judges next week.

The Washington trial has continued even as attention shifted to a federal court in San Antonio that is also grappling with the redistricting issue. After the U.S. Supreme Court rejected interim maps the court initially drew, it asked the San Antonio court to redraw the maps with more deference to the ones originally drawn by the Legislature.

The San Antonio court gave Texas and the coalition of nine groups until Feb. 6 to agree on temporary maps that would remain in place through November's election, or see the state's April 3 primaries delayed. But on Monday, an attorney for one of the groups said the settlement talks had stalled, putting the primary date in jeopardy.

In both proceedings, there's a lot on the line.

Texas will add four seats to its congressional delegation in 2012 because of adjustments made with 2010 census data. Both Democrats and Republicans believe the state will be an important factor in the battle for control of the U.S. House. Adjustments in Texas House and Senate maps could also affect the balance of power in the Legislature, though Republicans will almost certainly maintain control of both.

EU probes Samsung over wireless patents (AP)

BRUSSELS ? The European Union's antitrust watchdog says it is investigating whether Samsung Electronics is trying to illegally prevent competitors from using key patents for mobile devices, including Apple's latest iPad.

The European Commission said Tuesday it suspects Samsung of not giving other companies fair access to patents it holds on standardized technology for mobile devices ? despite committing to do so in 1998.

A spokeswoman for the Commission said the probe also affects tablets such as Apple's newest iPad, which includes the standardized wireless technology.

The Commission said that Samsung last year sought legal injunctions against other device makers in several EU states, alleging patent infringement.

The probe comes just as Samsung is locked in a battle with Apple over whether its Galaxy tablet too closely resembles the iPad.

In journalism, there?s what you call your dog-bites-man situation. Which is anything too common and expected to be a good story (unless the dog is one of those Resident Evil hellhounds, or the man is Cesar Millan). An example of a dog-bites-man science story is yet another confirmation of Einstein and relativity.

Al Sharpton: Obama???s Al Green karaoke moment helped save the economy (Daily Caller)

On his Friday MSNBC show ?PoliticsNation,? Rev. Al Sharpton explained that since President Barack Obama sang a few opening lines from Al Green?s ?Let?s Stay Together? at the Apollo Theater in Harlem last week, it sent download sales soaring. And that, he said, boosted the economy, which is something Republicans should be weary of come November.

?That video went viral and had everyone talking,? Sharpton said.

?Since that performance, sales for Al Green?s songs shot up 490 percent. That?s the best sales week for that song since they began tracking downloads nine years ago. The President sings, boosts classic songs and helps the economy. Hey Republicans, you sure you are ready to face him in the election??

Sharpton later added that Green?s song had another message, in that his side best ?stay together? through this election cycle.

?So he did it and helped sales,? Sharpton said. ?And I hope we listen to Al Green?s ?Let?s Stay Together? or we?ll all be back at the Apollo after November singing the blues.?

Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana celebrate at Sundance (AP)

PARK CITY, Utah ? Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana came to the Sundance Film Festival to promote their closing-night film, "The Words."

The two actors play a married couple in the movie, which follows an aspiring writer who gains fame when he finds an old manuscript and passes it off as his own.

The pair avoided any appearance of their reported off-screen romance by staying apart from one another while posing for photos and giving interviews to support the film. Saldana did affectionately touch Cooper as they passed in a hallway, though.

Both had been to Sundance before, where snow fell throughout the festival and the weather dipped into the teens. Still, Saldana maintained her fashionista edge.

"I did bring warm stuff but I also brought fashion-y stuff. Come on. You've got to pay the price, even if it's too cold," she said.

The 33-year-old actress wore green suede shoes with spiked stiletto heels despite the slushy conditions.

"They're kind of fabulous. They're also lethal. So I have to be really careful, and somebody has to be careful not to piss me off," she said with a smile. "Yeah right. I'm just trying not to fall. It's like `Please don't fall. Please don't fall,' if I'm walking."

Cooper's first time at the festival was 12 years earlier with the eventual cult comedy hit "Wet Hot American Summer."

"I wasn't even able to get into the screening," he recalled.

Saldana said playing Cooper's wife in "The Words" made her think about how she approaches relationships and the concept of unconditional love.

"Like how unconditional am I when I'm in love. Do you bypass certain things? Would I be able to be with a man ? or with someone ? that feels incomplete, doesn't matter what we do?" she said. "If we change this, if we get married, if we have a baby ? just someone that feels incomplete. Would I be able to deal with that for so many years and accept them as who they are and go, `Come as you are. This is who I fell in love with and I don't want to change you?'

"I'm not like that, which is why I wanted to play her, because it was a challenge, you know. Look at me, I totally said I'm not unconditional at all. So awful."

Cooper's part as author-plagiarist Rory Jansen is his second writerly role after playing a novelist in last year's "Limitless." But that's just coincidence, he said. Despite having a degree in English, the 37-year-old actor says he typically only writes in his "girlnal."

"Journal, sorry," he said. "That's a `Wet Hot' reference. Paul Rudd says that."

Saldana, meanwhile, is in the midst of shooting the "Star Trek" sequel in Los Angeles with director J.J. Abrams and much of the original's cast.

"It's wonderful because I've been dying to work with the cast again, to work with JJ," she said. "I love him so much. He's such an amazing human being and such an amazing storyteller and a great director, so what more can I ask for? I start the year and I'm literally going back to a very familiar environment and being a part of a great story."

"The Words," which also stars Dennis Quaid, Jeremy Irons, Ben Barnes and Olivia Wilde, premiered Friday. It was acquired early in the festival by CBS Films, which plans to release it theatrically in the fall. Sundance continues through Sunday.

Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross: It's Over!

Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross have split up after nearly two years together.

It's unclear exactly why the ex-husband of Kate Gosselin split with his lady friend, but reports say Ellen's distaste for the media was the final straw.

"Ellen didn't like the media attention and other things that came with the relationship," a source said. "That's one of the main reasons they broke up."

Wait ... we still pay attention to Jon Gosselin? Besides right now? Who knew!

Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross Picture

According to an insider, the twosome broke up more than a week ago, but it wasn't until Friday that Jon Gosselin confirmed the breakup on Twitter:

"Recently, after much thought and discussion, Ellen and I have decided to end our relationship. It was a mutual decision and we are both happy."

"We will remain best friends. We both plan to move forward and focus on our separate lives. We ask that you please respect our privacy at this time."

So far, no word from Ellen Ross personally, except a denial earlier this week that was debunked when Jon spilled the beans on Twitter. Whoops.
