I produced the 2008 documentary The Business of Being Born to educate women about their choices in childbirth, and raise questions about maternity care in the U.S. So many aspects of our system did not make sense to me and did not seem to function in the best interest of mothers and babies. It was shocking to me that 40 other countries ranked ahead of the U.S. in terms of newborn death risk and that our maternal mortality rates were on the rise. Both my children's births were such empowering, transformative experiences for me that I became passionate about making sure other new parents had the same opportunities. I felt most pregnant women were overly subjected to the "what-could-go-wrong" stories and the fear-based information.
The Business of Being Born, (a.k.a. BOBB) became an underground hit, a film that film critic Owen Gleiberman recently dubbed "... the rare documentary that is actually changing lives. It deserves to be called revolutionary." My director, Abby Epstein, and I receive hundreds of emails from parents who credit the film for setting them on the path to a positive birth experience or saving them from a potentially damaging one. Last November, Abby and I released our follow-up series, More Business of Being Born (a.k.a. More-BOBB.) Our new set of four films delves deeper into all things birth and features well-known faces including Cindy Crawford, Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bundchen, Melissa Joan Hart, Christy Turlington Burns and Laila Ali speaking openly about their diverse birth experiences.
WATCH:
Abby and I created More-BOBB to answer essential questions about labor and childbirth, covering topics that are not typically discussed in detail at a routine obstetric appointment. We just started hosting community screenings around the country and I am reminded once again about why this arena is my passion. Women desperately need this information as there seems to be a huge lack of resources and access to birth options. One appreciative mommy blogger wrote: "I really can't express how comprehensive and valuable these DVDs are. Save your Thursday nights and just watch these instead of going to pre-natal class..."
One of our films is titled "The VBAC Dilemma." What's a VBAC you might ask? It stands for "vaginal birth after cesarean." The VBAC rate has dropped from 28 percent in the 1990's to 9 percent today. You also might ask why most people still believe the old adage "once a cesarean, always a cesarean" and are not even aware that a VBAC can actually be a safer option in some cases than a repeat c-section. And you might be surprised to learn that a mother in Los Angeles is able to have a VBAC but a mother who lives 60 miles away in Ventura would be forced to have a repeat cesarean simply because the hospital's insurance policy wont cover it. Access to VBACs is becoming more crucial now that one in three American women give birth by cesarean. By denying mothers access to VBACs, more women are having multiple cesareans which become riskier with each surgery.
For me, this is not about promoting natural birth or claiming one model of care is superior to another. This is about doing the best for mothers and babies. The bottom line is that mothers who receive attentive prenatal care and have a safe, positive birth experience are in a better position to create a healthy attachment to their infants, have more success breastfeeding and enter the experience of motherhood feeling empowered. And, that concept -- the respect for birth as the sacred beginning of motherhood -- is what has become sorely lost in our mainstream medical system.
Globally, in 2009, an estimated 3.3 million babies died during their first four weeks of life. Researchers have estimated that these deaths could be reduced by two-thirds with measures like providing antibiotics and implementing resuscitation techniques. I ask you to join me in fighting for the right of all mothers to have access to safe birth options. How and where you decide to bring your child into this world is a choice that belongs to you. Like the life-changing empowerment I experienced during the births of my children, my work on behalf of global motherhood has revolutionized my purpose in the world.

Experience some innovative storytelling with today?s leading Fresh App, Numberlys. The app is kind of like an interactive storybook mixed with an animated feature, telling the story of the creation of the alphabet. It?s fun for kids and adults, and looks great. Following that is an update to Banters, a social network that?s all about sharing and responding to quotes. In games, Blockwick will challenge your puzzle-solving skills, while Darkness Rush: Saving Princess gives a horror spin to the running genre, along with some slick Unreal Engine 3 graphics.
Numerblys is something of an interactive storybook for kids, telling the story of the development of the alphabet. Combining reading, narration, computer-generated animation and interactive elements to tell the story portrayed in the app. Readers can follow along with the narration, as well as take part in the story in a few cool ways.
With a black-and-white aesthetic for most of the storytelling, the interactive elements of Numberlys are made to stand out by coloring them red. When a red object appears on the screen, you can tap it or otherwise interact with it to advance the story, recreate a moment, or make other actions happen. It?s a pretty neat game/movie/book hybrid in an app that kids should get a kick out of.
Seems like there?s a social network for everything in the App Store. You can share photos, share videos, share status updates and share your current reading list with the help of the Internet and an iPhone app. Banters expands your social networking capabilities even more, making it easy to share quotes among your friends.
A big update has just come through for Banters, allowing users to see featured quotes from all users right on the front page of the app, as well as those quotes shared by their friends in particular. Banters is sort of akin to Twitter, in that it includes small quotes that users can see and respond to within the network, but with less clutter. The posting process has also been simplified, with limits on messages removed, and more to make Banters work better for everyone.
Slide puzzler Blockwick is a simple enough concept, but in practice has all kinds of complexity built in. The game is all about moving colored blocks so that they touch blocks of like colors. You?ll have blue, red and yellow blocks to contend with, sometimes all at once, and your goal is to maneuver lots of blank blocks out of the way so you can match the colored blocks to defeat the level.
The complexity emerges with puzzles being filled with those blank tiles that come in various sizes and shapes. Some puzzles will be filled with tiny bits that need to be moved clear, requiring players to be able to see several moves down the line in order to be able to get blocks where they need to go. The first 60 puzzles in Blockwick are free. After that, more sets are available, each for a $0.99 in-app purchase.
A side-scrolling running game with Unreal Engine 3 graphics, Darkness Rush puts you in the role of a monster-type character: either a werewolf or a vampire. Your character runs through each level, dodging obstacles, collecting coins and earning crystals that go toward allowing you to transform into your bestial form. Once you?ve done that, you?re superpowered and can really start to do some damage.
As you plow through the game, you?ll destroy things like runes to regain magic power and dodge spikes and fireballs in order to keep yourself going. Coins you collect along the way can be used to purchase items that can get you further, and you?ll also attempt to complete mini-challenges along the way. It?s a bit like a horror story version of Jetpack Joyride, and it?s fun in all the same ways.

ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2012) ? Yoga is one of the hottest fitness trends and a style known as "hot yoga" is gaining in popularity.
Hot yoga refers to yoga practiced in a heated environment, with the room temperature generally reaching 90 to 105 degrees. The theory behind it is that hot yoga helps the body to sweat out toxins while allowing the practitioner to safely achieve deeper poses. Bikram is a common form of hot yoga.
Almost 16 million Americans practice some form of yoga, according to a 2008 study in the Yoga Journal.
While the practice can offer health benefits and a sense of well-being, people practicing hot yoga, especially beginners, should take certain precautions, according to Diana Zotos, a certified yoga instructor and physical therapist in the Rehabilitation Department at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
"Yoga of any type is physically challenging, and the heated environment of hot yoga makes the practice especially demanding," Zotos says. "The heat makes people feel as if they can stretch deeper into poses and can give them a false sense of flexibility. This can lead to muscle strains or damage to the joint, including ligaments and cartilage."
Zotos says people over 40 who have never done Bikram yoga may be at greater risk of injury, and she recommends they familiarize themselves with it prior to trying a class. "There are many books and videos that describe this style and can demonstrate the poses and techniques," she says. "Since classes are constructed of the same 26 poses, people can become familiar with them beforehand."
Beginners should keep in mind that poses will require a certain level of leg, core and upper body strength, as well as balance, according to Zotos. People should also have a tolerance for stretching and moderate flexibility in their legs and spine.
"The heat factor also puts more strain on the heart and challenges endurance. That being said, people should be of good cardiovascular health; have healthy hip, knee, spine and shoulder joints; shouldn't have balance or neurological issues; and should have a general tolerance for excessive heat," she advises.
Zotos has these additional tips:
? Be well-prepared. Bring a mat and towel, and wear shorts and a tank top. If possible, bring a buddy. It can be more fun and less intimidating if you take your first class with a friend.
? Make sure you drink plenty of fluids well before class (but not coffee or soda). Don't eat anything too heavy (more than 200 calories) two to three hours prior to class.
? Make sure the studio and teachers have a good reputation. Ask about their experience and credentials. The teacher should be certified in Bikram or another form of yoga.
? Try to arrive early. This way you can introduce yourself and speak with the instructor, pick a good spot in the studio to set up your mat and get comfortable with your surroundings and the heat.
? Start slowly and learn the basics. Never push yourself to the point of pain while stretching or assuming a position.
? Listen to your body. Stop at the first sign of discomfort. If you are extremely fatigued, take a break. Do not try yoga poses beyond your experience or comfort level.
? Don't get discouraged if you can't reach a pose. It's not a competition.
? Ask questions if you're not sure how to perform a pose.
? If you get dizzy, lightheaded, overheated or experience chest pain, STOP immediately. Seek medical assistance if necessary.
Anyone who questions whether hot yoga is safe for them should consult their physician, Zotos says. "If you have sensitivity to heat, if you've ever had heat stroke or tend to get fatigued, dizzy or dehydrated quickly, you should ask your doctor before starting hot yoga. Anyone with osteoarthritis, any rheumatologic arthritis, pain in muscles or a joint, or any kind of previous injury should check with their doctor."
Zotos says it's especially important that anyone who has hypertension, low blood pressure or heart disease check with their cardiologist before trying hot yoga.

Well, this is a new way to garner attention.
Hulk Hogan told TMZ this week that he's prepared to shave off his iconic mustache because he's about to go on "some auditions." While this may be meaningless to some, it's downright apocalyptic to others.
"Not only would the removal of his lower nose foliage cause angels in heaven to die and fall to earth - as is written in biblical texts - but it would send a poor message to young people of Mustached American descent who wish to embrace the Mustached American experience," said Dr. Aaron Perlut, Chairman of the American Mustache Institute, when told of Hogan's plans.
Dr. Perlut hopes Hulk reconsiders, lest "mass chaos and deep bouts of depression" reign for all with facial hair.
This sounds rather extreme in our view. It's not like Ron Swanson is threatening to shave. What do you think? Should Hulk Hogan axe his mustache?

No tissues were necessary for the cast and crew of weepy drama "The Descendants." The Alexander Payne-written and -directed film took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama, beating out star George Clooney's other film "The Ides of March," along with "The Help," "Hugo," "Moneyball" and "War Horse."
"We had an extraordinary ensemble cast of young and older actors, veterans and newcomers, but our quarterback was George Clooney," said producer Jim Burke during his acceptance speech. "Besides giving a career-best performance, in my mind, he was a generous actor who helped everyone do his best. So thank you very much, George. And if this movie becomes a timeless movie, which I feel like it will be to me, I feel like it's because of our filmmaker and friend, Alexander Payne."
"The Descendants" received five noms from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including Best Performance by an Actress (Shailene Woodley), Best Director (Alexander Payne), Best Screenplay (Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne and Jim Rash) and Best Performance by an Actor, which Clooney won. Clooney also paid tribute to Payne in his acceptance speech, saying, "Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend."
The flick, about a widowed land baron (Clooney) who's forced to reconnect with his young daughters, has racked up plenty of awards-season buzz (and was among MTV's top 10 films of 2011). The film earned seven nominations and won Best Actor for Clooney at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on January 12.
The nods at tonight's Golden Globes could be a harbinger for things to come, as the Academy Award nominations will be announced January 24.
Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Golden Globes winners, and don't miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet!
