Sinead divorce is off after night of 'love making'

Sinead O'Connor's rollercoaster romance with Barry Herridge has taken another turn.

Though the 45-year-old singer recently announced plans to divorce Herridge, O'Connor announced they have reconciled via Twitter Tuesday.

"Spent a beautiful evening of love making with none other than my husband," the Irish singer wrote. "We decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend again and stay married, but we did rush [into tying the knot]."

O'Connor predicts they will be "sickeningly happy" together and plans to meet with a marriage counselor. She also hopes to move in with Herridge, 38, "in like a year, like regular people."

O'Connor and Herridge wed on the singer's birthday at Las Vegas' Little White Wedding Chapel ? the same spot where Britney Spears and Jason Alexander tied the knot in 2004. It was the the fourth marriage for the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer, whose ex-husbands include music producer John Reynolds, journalist Nicholas Sommerlad and musician Steve Cooney.

NATO: 5 troops killed in south Afghanistan

Roadside bombs killed five NATO service members in southern Afghanistan on Friday, the alliance said.

Detained members of Garda World private security company are seen near their confiscated arms during a news event in Kabul, Afghanistan, Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012. Two British nationals along with their Afghan colleagues from Garda World private security company operating in Kabul have been detained for alleged offences involving illegal weapons.

Roadside bombs killed five NATO service members in southern Afghanistan on Friday, the alliance said.

The deaths bring to nine the number of coalition troops killed since the start of the year.

At least 544 NATO troops died in Afghanistan in 2011. It was the second deadliest year for the coalition in the 10-year war.

Four troops died in one of Friday's bombings and one was killed in a separate blast. The alliance said both incidents occurred in southern Afghanistan but provided no further details.

U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan have surged since 2009 and the government's army and police have rapidly expanded, resulting in the capture and killing of thousands of insurgents. Nonetheless, the guerrillas have retained their capability to inflict losses on coalition forces.

Faced with overwhelming allied superiority in numbers and firepower, the Taliban largely avoid direct combat, relying instead on roadside bombs, small ambushes and hit-and-run tactics to harass NATO and government forces.

Taliban military activities typically abate during the winter months, due to heavy snows and bitter cold in the rough mountain terrain.

Wind-up Knight tops iPhone Games of the Week (Appolicious)

The first week of 2012 has been a bit sparse in terms of games, but that doesn?t mean there haven?t been some standouts among those titles that dropped into the iTunes App Store right before and right after the holiday freeze. Leading today?s charge is Wind-up Knight, a runner game similar to many others in the App Store but packing a lot of depth. Read all about it and four other quality choices below.

A side-scrolling running title with lots of platforming elements, Wind-up Knight has you jumping goals and fighting off enemies as you charge through each level. Timing is critical, and so is paying careful attention to the obstacles you face so you can fight through them by gathering swords, shields, armor and other upgrades. Wind-up Knight has a whole bunch of levels to play through and a fair degree of difficulty to keep challenge-seekers busy. It?s a solid take on a popular genre in the App Store, and Wind-up Knight brings a lot of freshness to it.

Justin Smith?s RSSS is a pretty hilarious take on track and field events you might find in the Summer Olympics. Despite the name, the game is definitely not realistic, nor is it really much of a sports simulator. But it does use a unique take on touch controls to do things like throw a javelin or guide a horse over gates in an equestrian event. RSSS?s super low-res graphics, coupled with an old-school feel and a goofy control scheme, make it endearing. Its high degree of difficulty and four-player pass-and-play multiplayer also make it fun to play with friends.

Vlambeer?s port of its PC smash hit is a blast to play on iOS just like on your computer, but it?s still pretty difficult. The premise is simple: fight off endless hordes of enemies to collect a single crate on each side-scrolling, platform-filled level. Each time you grab a crate, you get a new gun and your score goes up. And each time, a new crate appears somewhere on the level. You?re constantly changing weapons, braving the onslaught of bad guys and fighting for your life with weapons ranging from revolvers to rocket launchers. Super Crate Box has lots to unlock and earn, plenty of challenge, and a sufficiently old-school feel.

Zenonia 4 (iPhone, iPad) Free

The fourth installment of the highly popular role-playing series makes the game free to play, but maintains all the cool things about Zenonia like choosing a class of hero, hours and hours of gameplay and finding and upgrading equipment. Even better, Zenonia 4 packs lots of multiplayer options that let you take the fight online. The title has the best graphics of the series, as well as plenty of immersive gameplay. Just beware that the freemium style is meant to get you hooked and then encourage you to spend money within the game. This can definitely turn off some players.

Replicating the popular massively multiplayer online game League of Legends, Legendary Heroes puts you in control of three ?heroes? placed in a battle against other heroes and their minions. You can control one hero at a time moving from your side of each level to the enemy side, where you?ll need to destroy towers and enemies in order to take over and dominate. Destroying the ?source? deep in enemy territory wins you the game, and Legendary Heroes balances a lot of strategy with careful control of your forces to come out victorious.

Kent State University provost heading to New Mexico

KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert Frank will become the new president at the University of New Mexico.

Frank had announced last July that he wanted to pursue opportunities to become a college president and would leave the university by May, 2012. He has been provost since 2007.

UNM regents are expected to appoint Frank today?and he will assume his position in June.

He beat out four other candidates seeking to replace outgoing UNM President David Schmidly, who took over in 2007, according to the Albuquerque Journal. Schmidy earns a $587,000 total package from UNM. Regents said the new president will likely receive a smaller compensation package, the newspaper said.

GA police car hits SUV; Braves trainer's wife dies (AP)

ATLANTA ? The Atlanta Braves offered its condolences over the weekend to head trainer Jeff Porter, saying the team was "deeply saddened" after Porter's wife Kathy died in what authorities described as a collision between a Georgia State Patrol cruiser and an SUV driven by the trainer.

"The Braves family is deeply saddened and shocked to learn about the tragic accident," the team said in an emailed statement hours after the crash Saturday afternoon. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jeff and Kathy's family, their son David and all their friends and loved ones."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/urkIDS ) reported that Porter, his wife and son and a friend were on their way to the Chick-fil-A-Bowl at the time, about 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

A witness, Steve Bouye, told the newspaper on Sunday he had just gotten off work from his job as a federal prison employee when he saw the trooper's cruiser zoom past him on Saturday afternoon.

"As soon as I saw him go past I said `Man I hope he don't hit nobody,'" Bouye said. "Seconds later I heard a big blast like a train crash."

Bouye said he and Jeff Porter tried unsuccessfully to open Kathy Porter's door as she faded in and out of consciousness after the collision.

State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said in an email statement late Saturday that the trooper was traveling with emergency lights and siren activated Saturday afternoon when the cruiser struck a Ford Expedition driven by Jeff Porter at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Capitol Avenue.

Wright said the trooper, who had been traveling westbound on Memorial Drive, was going to assist another trooper who was attempting to stop a motorcyclist on nearby Interstate 20, west of the Downtown Connector. Wright said that motorcyclist had failed to yield.

State police provided few new details Sunday, but Wright said in an email statement that the trooper "was not involved in a chase but going to assist another trooper."

According to Wright, the Ford Expedition was traveling northbound on Capitol Avenue when it was struck on the passenger side. The statement said the SUV then struck a utility pole.

Kathy Porter, 54, of Loganville, a passenger in the SUV, died in the crash, Wright's statement to The Associated Press said. It added that Jeff Porter and two other passengers in the SUV_ the couple's 19-year-old son David and a friend, Courtney Ann Williams, 18, of Grayson ? were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries. All three were released later Saturday.

The Georgia State Patrol on Sunday night identified the officer as Trooper First Class Donald Crozier, a 10-year veteran.

He was examined at the same hospital and released. He has been placed on administrative leave as state police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Fulton County District Attorney's office investigate. Wright said the State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was dispatched to the crash scene to help determine the cause.

"Any personnel actions related to the crash will be based on the findings of the various investigations," Wright wrote.

According to an MLB.com article posted on the Braves web site, former manager Bobby Cox, manager Fredi Gonzales and catcher Brian McCann went to the hospital to be with Jeff Porter after the accident. The article said Porter joined Atlanta's training staff in 1985 and has been head trainer since 2003.

Is that former Times Union blogger J. Eric Smith on the TV Monday night? It could be?

Just wanted to pass this along.

J. Eric Smith used to blog for the Times Union from approximately 2006 to 2010.? He later left the TU blog portal and formed his own independent blog community portal, Indie Albany.

And although Indie Albany is doing quite well for itself, J Eric is not part of the Albany community any more.? A month or so ago, he accepted a new job opportunity in Des Moines, Iowa.? And yes, he?s got an independent blog portal there as well, I think it?s called Indie Moines.

But why am I recounting all this?

Well, apparently J Eric?s move from New York to Iowa may be part of a larger picture ? one that will air tonight on NBC (WNYT in Albany, WHO in Des Moines).? Seems that J Eric got interviewed by NBC?s Brian Williams for Williams? television show Rock Center; J Eric was asked about his move from the Capital District to Hawkeye country.

So if you watch NBC tonight at 9 Eastern, 8 central, and you recognize a former TU blogger that looks like this -

Yep, it?s J Eric Smith.? All the best, buddy.

Italy Slaps Apple with $1.2 Million Fee

By Ashley Cloninger
Scottrade: $7 Online Trades. Real-Time Stock Quotes

Apple?s (NASDAQ:AAPL) holiday sales celebration was dampened by a 900,000 euro ($1.2 million) fee from the Italian government. The Italian Antitrust Authority said Apple misled Italian consumers into purchasing an extended warranty that was unnecessary given Italy?s product service requirements.

Don?t Miss:?Apple and Android See Spikes in Activations Over Holiday Weekend.

The Italian (NYSE:EWI) government said Apple wrongly encouraged Italian customers to purchase its AppleCare warranty service, which extends their standard one-year warranty on Apple devices to two years. The service extension would have been moot for Italian customers because Italy requires a standard two years of complimentary technical support.

In addition to the fine, the antitrust agency also gave Apple 90 days to update its website to reflect the free-of-charge two-year warranty.

Apple officials were unavailable for comment last week regarding the fine. The Italian Antitrust Authority says Apple has 60 days to appeal the ruling. Apple is also under investigation in Europe for possible price-fixing with e-book publishers and for patent disputes with Samsung.
