A Christmas tree farmer as president? How he raised spirits during wartime.

US presidents have had Christmas trees at the White House for years.?But only one was a bona fide Christmas tree farmer, according to his?voter registration card.

Many presidents have lit a national Christmas tree outdoors on the Ellipse. They?ve also entertained guests round the bedecked White House Christmas tree inside the Executive Mansion, in the big Blue Room.?

But only one raised and sold Christmas trees himself. He even wrote ?Christmas tree farmer? on the occupation line of his voter registration card. Who was it?

We?ll give you a hint ? he also hosted perhaps the most sober and moving White House tree ceremony of modern times.

Give up? It was Franklin D. Roosevelt, gentleman horticulturist. He raised Christmas trees at his Hyde Park estate.

He planted the evergreens when they were six inches high. Every two years or so a hired hand would weed them. Trees that reached the age of 10 years were cut for sale. FDR?s secretary Grace Tulley would write chain stores to remind them the president had trees in stock; these outlets would buy them up.

He hoped to produce trees ?in such quantity that it would be a really profitable venture,? said Ms. Tulley in historian Stanley Weintraub?s new book, ?Pearl Harbor Christmas.?

Pearl Harbor was the cause of the emotional tree-lighting ceremony, of course. The Japanese surprise attack took place on Dec. 7, 1941. Within days the United States was at war with Japan and Germany. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in Washington Dec. 22 for consultations with his new ally. He stayed at the White House, keeping FDR up late into the night for talk and cigars.

On Christmas Eve the two leaders of the free world stood on the South Portico of the White House to light the national tree. Thousands watched in person; millions listened on radio.

FDR said that at such a time, it was natural to question why Christmas trees should be lit at all. The reason, he said, was that the nation needed to armor its hearts as well as its soldiers.

?When we make ready our hearts for the labor and the suffering and the ultimate victory which lie ahead, then we observe Christmas Day ? with all of its memories and all of its meanings ? as we should,? said Roosevelt. The national tree was not lit again until Christmas 1945, in the wake of the Allied victory.

Iraq vice president says bombs were inside job

Updated December 24, 2011 22:07:25

Iraq's vice president Tariq al-Hashemi has alleged that a series of bombings which killed scores of people in Baghdad on Thursday were organised from within the Iraqi government.

Mr Hashemi, a Sunni Muslim, is embroiled in a deep political row with the Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has issued an arrest warrant against him.

The vice president says only government involvement could explain why the bombers were able to plant so many explosives unhindered.

"What happened yesterday, I'm sure, that body inside the government manipulated all these explosives and the damages," he told BBC Persian television.

"Nobody else could be qualified for that at all. And it's not the first time. This style of terrorist attack, it's well beyond even Al Qaeda to do it."

The BBC website quoted him as saying: "After Americans decided to pull out, time comes for him, he felt himself free to try to get rid of his political rivals and opponents and critics - this is why he started with me, in due course he will continue with others."

Mr Hashemi also says the United States should shoulder some of the blame, because of the style of management left in place after the withdrawal of the last of its troops.

"We don't have in fact a modern, transparent state of law, democratic country," he said.

"What we do have, unfortunately, is sectarian oriented, non-independent judicial system.

"We do have in fact a model which make us and the Americans not proud of what we have achieved."

Mr Maliki sought Mr Hashemi's arrest on terrorism charges this week.

After Friday prayers, with Sunni imams warning Mr Maliki was seeking to foment sectarian divisions, protesters turned out on the streets of Sunni-dominated Samarra, Ramadi, Baiji and Qaim, many waving banners in support of Mr Hashemi and criticising the government.

The crisis could scuttle a power-sharing agreement that splits posts among Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish leaders just days after the last American troops withdrew nearly nine years after the invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

"What's happening in Iraq is settling political scores," Iyad Allawi, Mr Maliki's predecessor and head of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, told al-Arabiya television.

An emergency session in parliament among leaders of political blocs to debate the crisis was cancelled on Friday.

I lived as a turkey for a year

To lift the lid on the lives of turkeys, naturalist Joe Hutto became a full-time "mother" to a brood of poults. What did he learn?

You lived with wild turkeys in rural Florida for over a year. How did it all begin?
I had been experimenting with the imprinting phenomenon - in which young animals become attached to the first moving object they encounter - for years, with many types of birds and mammals. Wild turkeys are difficult to come by, so when I lucked upon some wild turkey eggs I decided: OK, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

These turkeys regarded you as their mother. Was that a lot of responsibility?
It was, because wild turkeys are precocial - they are born fully alert and ambulatory and don't stay in the nest. They have to imprint at birth so they know who mum is, and they can't be left alone at all. I realised that if I was going to do this project then it was going to be a 24-hour-a-day commitment, which I was willing to do.

What did being their mother mean in practice?
I had to be with them before daylight so that when they flew down from the roost their mother was there waiting, and I had to remain with them until after dark. If I tried to leave before it was completely dark they would fly down and try to follow me, and then they were left on the ground, where they were vulnerable to snakes or weasels.

Was your research scientific?
It started out as a science project but it became more than that to me. I found it impossible to avoid a very personal involvement, so a certain scientific empiricism and detachment was immediately lost in the process.

Were there any specific skills you had to teach the turkey poults?
Not at all. Their innate understanding of ecology was complete. They knew everything from birth, and the knowledge is very specific. That was one of the most surprising things about the study. From birth they knew exactly which insect they could eat and which was dangerous. I didn't have to intervene and say: "No, no, don't try to eat that wasp." They knew not to eat the wasp.

Did you learn to talk "turkey"?
They sort of taught me their language. Researchers had identified 25 to 30 calls in wild turkeys that I was familiar with. But I learned that wild turkey vocabulary was much more complex than I had realised - within each of their calls were different inflexions that had specific meanings. For example, they had an alarm call for dangerous reptiles, but what I learned was that in that call there were specific inflexions that would identify a species of snake. Eventually when I heard a certain vocalisation I knew without question they had found a rattlesnake.

So turkeys are not as stupid as their reputation suggests?
No. But I think the first thing we do when we domesticate an animalMovie Camera is breed the fine evolutionary edge out of them. They lose that well-honed razor's edge of survival that causes them to be clever, independent and a survivor. In some sense we breed the brains out of them.

Profile

Joe Hutto is an ethologist. As well as turkeys, he has studied Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and has spent the past six years living with mule deer. My Life As A Turkey, a documentary on his time with turkeys, came out on DVD last month

Razer Blade gaming laptop delayed until mid-to-late January due to SSD upgrade

Eagerly waiting to get your hands on that nearly $3,000 Razer Blade gaming laptop? Then we're afraid we've got a bit of bad news. Razer confirmed this week on its Facebook page that the initial batch of shipments have been delayed until mid-to-late January (much like the also-delayed Tiamat gaming headset). That's due to a last-minute hard drive upgrade from the standard 320GB HDD to a 256GB SSD -- a switch that Razer says it's been able to do without increasing the $2,799 list price, but which it can't do without incurring a delay (it promises it'll be worth it). To keep the peace with gamers, Razer says it will gladly throw in a free Razer Orochi Blade Edition gaming mouse with your Blade laptop order -- details on receiving it can also be found on the company's Facebook page linked below.

Ancient cells hold evidence of a massive die-off of Native Americans

Web edition : Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

When European settlers arrived in North America, they brought their diseases with them. Shortly thereafter, large numbers of Native Americans began dying from smallpox infection. Five-hundred-year-old documents record this tale, but now scientists say they?ve found additional evidence for this?buried deep inside human cells.

House Republicans Give In on the Payroll Tax (The Atlantic Wire)

House Republicans have reversed course and agreed to pass the payroll tax cut extension for two more months, reports National Journal, citing "Republican and Democratic sources." It comes after first Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and then President Obama reiterated today that the House ought to pass the temporary compromise before starting to negotiate on a full-year extension of the 2 percent cut, which is currently set to expire January 1. House Speaker John Boehner originally rejected McConnell's request, saying he'd prefer to work out a deal on the full-year extension now. (Most of the Senate went home, you'll recall, foolishly assuming the House would just pass the bill they'd sent them.) CNN reports the House Republicans will hold a conference today at 5 p.m., and we should hear more about the compromise then.
