FRIDAY, Nov. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Repeated bouts of pelvic inflammatory disease increase a woman's risk of chronic pelvic pain and infertility, a new study says.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) -- a complication of sexually transmitted diseases -- is marked by inflammation of the reproductive organs. The condition affects more than 800,000 women in the United States each year and one in 10 of them becomes infertile, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This study included 831 women, aged 14 to 38, with mild to moderate pelvic inflammatory disease who were followed for seven years after their initial diagnosis. During the follow-up, 21 percent of the women had one or more PID episodes after the initial diagnosis, nearly one-fifth were diagnosed as infertile, 43 percent reported chronic pelvic pain and 57 percent got pregnant.
Women with repeat episodes of pelvic inflammatory disease were nearly twice as likely to experience infertility compared to women who didn't have a recurrence of the condition after being treated for their initial diagnosis. Women with recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease were also four times more likely to report chronic pelvic pain.
Nearly 40 percent of the teens in the study reported chronic pelvic pain. Those with recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease were five times more likely to have chronic pelvic pain than those without the condition. Repeated bouts of pelvic inflammatory disease did not increase the risk of infertility in teen girls, but what researchers called a concerning number (18 percent of 209) did show signs of infertility, they said.
"The fact that close to one-fifth of these girls were already showing signs of infertility is quite alarming and might mean that the numbers will increase as these girls get older and actively try to get pregnant," lead investigator Dr. Maria Trent, a pediatrician and expert on teen reproductive health at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, said in a Hopkins news release.
Overall, the findings show that pelvic inflammatory disease can have a serious effect on women's reproductive health and highlight the importance of sexually transmitted infections prevention, early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, the researchers said.
"When it comes to [pelvic inflammatory disease], we must remain as vigilant as ever. Even though PID has changed over time, it is still very much a disease that can have detrimental consequences to a woman's childbearing ability and can lead to chronic pelvic pain down the road," Trent said.

Scientists at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine Center for Research in FOP and Related Disorders have developed a new genetic approach to specifically block the damaged copy of the gene for a rare bone disease, while leaving the normal copy untouched.
Lead author Josef Kaplan, PhD, postdoctoral fellow; and senior authors Eileen M. Shore, PhD, and Frederick S. Kaplan, MD, both from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, published this new proof-of-principle approach for treating the disease, called FOP, in the online edition of Gene Therapy.
FOP, fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, is a rare genetic disorder of progressive extra bone formation for which there is presently no cure. It is caused by a mutation in the gene for ACVR1/ALK2, a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) receptor that occurs in all classically affected individuals. Individuals who have FOP harbor one normal copy and one damaged copy of the ACVR1/ALK2 gene in each cell. The mutation increases the amount of BMP in cells to greater than normal levels, which initiates the transformation of muscles and cartilage into a disabling second skeleton of bone.
Using a special type of RNA molecule engineered to specifically silence the damaged copy of the gene rather than the normal copy -- a process known as RNA interference, or RNAi -- the scientists restored the cellular function caused by the FOP mutation by ridding cells of the mutant ACVR1/ALK2 mRNA. Cells were essentially left with only normal copies of ACVR1/ALK2 mRNA, thus adjusting the protein's activity to normal, similar to that of cells without the FOP mutation.
The human cells used in the experiments were adult stem cells obtained directly from discarded baby teeth donated by FOP patients. These contained the exact combination of damaged and normal ACVR1/ALK2 receptor proteins found in all classically affected FOP patients worldwide. The discarded teeth were obtained from FOP pediatric patients and normal controls, usually non-affected siblings, in the ongoing "FOP Good Tooth Fairy Program."
The authors caution that the utility of the RNAi approach must be confirmed in mouse models of classic FOP prior to its consideration for human use. Additionally, other hurdles stand in the way of human application at the present time, most notably safe delivery of the small RNA molecules to cells in the human body.
The authors acknowledge that they have a long way to go, but have taken a big first step. "Improvements in RNAi design are advancing at a rapid rate and will enhance the stability, potency, and specificity of inhibitory RNAs, allowing for long-term experiments both in vitro and in vivo," says Shore.

(Reuters) ? Activision Blizzard revealed it has lost almost a million users for its "World of Warcraft" cash cow, dampening enthusiasm for its blockbuster "Call of Duty" franchise and wiping 3 percent off its share price.
The largest U.S. video games publisher raised its earnings outlook due to strong demand for its top shooter title, which began selling midnight Tuesday. But Wall Street fretted over the loss of subscriptions to the online fantasy game, one of its top profit generators.
Also on Tuesday, smaller rival Take-Two Interactive reported a net loss warning that top sports title "NBA 2K11" would take a sales hit because of labor strife that has delayed the start of the National Basketball Association season. Its shares dipped 2.5 percent.)
Activision Blizzard shares had gained initially after its improved earnings outlook, but reversed to fall more than 3 percent in after-hours trading. Its shares touched a 52-week high during the regular session on Tuesday.
Halfway through a results conference call, executives said it finished the quarter with 10.3 million active subscribers to World of Warcraft, the online role-playing game that generated more than a $1 billion in revenue last year.
That was down from 11.1 million subscribers at the end of the previous quarter.
"This trend is not good, especially when this business is their bedrock, their most profitable revenue-recurring business," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.
Pachter added that this steep dropoff in regular-paying users makes the company more vulnerable to its main rival, Electronic Arts, which is releasing a highly anticipated online game based on "Star Wars" in December.
Activision said on the conference call it was working on developing new content to improve its game.
The company raised its earnings per share forecast for the year by 10 percent because it now expects the latest version of "Call of Duty" to perform better than it had planned. The game went on sale at midnight on Tuesday and stores such as GameStop and Wal-Mart stayed opened late so the game's fans could buy it early.
"It's on track to be the most successful 'Call of Duty' game ever," Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said in an interview. He added pre-orders of the game were higher than last year's.
The last edition of "Call of Duty" generated $1 billion in revenue in less than two months at the end of 2010, which set an industry record.
Analysts were surprised that Activision raised its earnings outlook on Tuesday so soon after its latest game came out.
"The Street wasn't expecting this but the game launched last night so Activision must have a pretty good feel for how things are going," said Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia.
NEW SERVICE
Activision now expects earnings per share of 85 cents on revenue of $4.25 billion for 2011. This beat even the highest analyst estimate of 82 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
It previously expected earnings per share of 77 cents on revenue of $4.05 billion.
To go along with the game, Activision is releasing "Call of Duty Elite," a new subscription service that costs $50 annually and offers extra online content, including apps for mobile devices.
But gamers who used the service on Tuesday faced technical problems, which Activision said was because more people signed up than expected, overwhelming the network. The company's CEO told Reuters on Tuesday the company would fix the problem shortly.
"We run 32 data centers around the world, so we're pretty good at addressing these issues," Kotick said.
Taking into account the deferral of digital revenue from online games, its third-quarter revenue fell 27 percent to $627 million. That beat analysts' expectations of $558.4 million.
The revenue drop was expected by analysts, since the company released a new version of the popular game, "StarCraft" in the same quarter a year ago.
Adjusted for revenue from online games, it posted earnings per share of 7 cents, which beat Wall Street's expectations of 2 cents per share.
Activision shares were trading about 45 cents lower at $13.48 in after-hours trading.
Take-Two's stock was down at $15.26 after-hours. CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors on its conference call that the lockout could hurt "NBA 2K11", but would not elaborate.
"We are seeing some impact from the lockout, and it's not positive," Zelnick said. In an interview, he declined to comment on how big the impact of sales would be.
Bhatia, the Sterne Agee analyst, expects 20 percent lower sales of the game without a basketball season.
