Mars rover beams back eerie human voice - and postcard

The first broadcast of a human voice from another planet tells us nothing new about our solar system, but talk about eerie. The Mars Curiosity rover has beamed back the disembodied voice of NASA administrator Charles Bolden, making a speech recorded before Curiosity launched.

"Curiosity will bring benefits to Earth and inspire a new generation of scientists and explorers as it prepares the way for a human mission in the not too distant future," Bolden says via the audio file.

The stunt is one of a string of firsts for the rover, which landed safely on the Red Planet on 6 August. These include beaming back stunning high-resolution colour images: the "postcard" to the right shows Mount Sharp, also known as Aeolis Mons, the focus of Curiosity's search for signs of life.

Curiosity has also stretched its robotic arm, and taken its first steps away from the landing site, which the team last week named after science fiction author Ray Bradbury.

Sniffing Florida

Bradbury Landing is the first named site on Mars not marked by an object, but by ephemeral burn scars from the rover's landing thrusters. Project scientist John Grotzinger describes the site as "four scour marks with wheel tracks that basically begin from nowhere".

Curiosity took its first sniff with the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument, which has two spectrometers for determining atmospheric composition.

Rather like Bolden's canned speech, however, the whiff wasn't Martian in origin. The pumps meant to clear the instrument of residual Earthly gases jammed, said SAM principal investigator Paul Mahaffy, "so for our first sample, we did not measure Mars atmosphere, we measured Florida air".

Times Internet* (Indiatimes) has launched?Satvikshop.com, an online store offering organic and ayurvedic solutions and products from multiple brands. The portal offers products from brand partners like Dabur ,Organic India & Morarka Organic Foods, among others. In addition to offering products, the site also offers free consultation with a panel of 20 in-house experts, about ayurvedic treatments for various ailments.Users can post their questions online and receive answers via chat and e-mail, in addition to a call center.

Speaking with MediaNama,Subhanker Sarker, COO & Business Head of Indiatimes Shopping & Saatvikshop.com, informed that the site had an inventory of 1,000 SKUs already, and that it aims to expand it to 2,000 SKUs by the end of September 2012. He said that the focus of the site would be to introduce and bring new customers to the site by providing consultation and guidance, instead of merely offering these products online.

On being quizzed about whether the site complied with regulatory guidelines, he responded that Satvikshop was only offering OTC (over the counter) medication.

Response: He also informed that following the site?s launch on Friday (24th August), it was already registering 100 transactions per day, with an average transaction value of Rs 1200. The company aims to achieve an average transaction value of Rs 800.

A separate vertical: Although Indiatimes Shopping also offers astrology related services, and spiritual & puja products, there are no plans to merge them with Satvikshop, according to Sarker. He added that Satvikshop would continue as a separate vertical. We also noticed that the Indiatimes Shopping homepage does not link to Satvikshop, and retails similar products including organic tea and some over the counter medicines, separately. We wonder if the company would eliminate this overlap in the future.

On Pricing: Sarker said that the site does not intend to be a discount destination, and that pricing would be at par with offline stores. He said that the company had worked out a margin structure in line with it.

Site Interface & Product Offering

The site is essentially divided into two tabs: Ayurveda and Organic, each?featuring?related products. The Ayurveda products page allows users to browse through ayurvedic medicinal products across various categories, including?gender, diseases, organ care, and common ailments. Users can search through products from multiple brands as well as all products of a single brand.?Product attributes include their description, brand, ingredients, symptoms, contra-indications, side-effects, user reviews, recipes, nutritional facts, and dosage. Users can also do a keyword search with product names, ailments and conditions, among others.

The ?Organic? tab features organic food items?across various categories, including cereals, spices, health food, Pulses and others. It also offers search functionality similar to the Ayurveda section.?The website also features a blog with updates related to ?organic and ayurvedic lifestyle.

The site offers free shipping across India and supports payment methods like?Credit Cards, Net Banking and Debit Cards. We observed that the site does not offer Cash on Delivery, at the moment.

Other Players: Ayurvedic medicine makers Himalaya Drug Company also has an online store.??Dabur India Ltd, another major player in the ayurveda drugs segment also plans to extend its personal-care products focused retail chain, ?NewU? to the online space, albeit focusing mainly on personal care products. Argentine couple wins world tango competition

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? A hometown couple triumphed Monday in Argentina's annual tango competition, outdancing pairs from around the world. The Salon Tango finals, followed by Tuesday's Stage Tango competition, are the highlights of the two-week festival, now celebrating its tenth year.

Facundo de la Cruz Gomez Palavecino and Paola Sanz, a couple in real life as well as on the dance floor, won with a score of 8.81 from an exacting seven-member jury comprised of dancers and choreographers as a crowd of thousands cheered them on in Luna Park stadium.

"This is the dream of every dancer, to win the global competition and have more job offers. We achieved it in the face of very good dancers from all over the world," a very emotional Gomez Palavecino said after their victory was announced.

In the end, four Argentine couples won the most points. The top winners walked away with prizes including $8,600 dollars in cash and tickets to Paris, where they'll be expected to perform. More importantly, they garnered the respect of tango fans worldwide.

"This competition can change the lives of the winners," agreed the capital's culture minister, Hernan Lombardi. "They'll begin to travel the world, make themselves famous and become ambassadors of Buenos Aires."

This year's festival also honored Astor Piazzolla, the legendary composer and bandoneonista who revived the genre and infuriated purists by blending tango with rock music in the 1970s.

Piazzolla died 20 years ago but tango is still growing in popularity as a unique form of music, poetry and dance. This year's festival showed the genre is still evolving, too ? from an under-25 orchestra that wowed the opening party to a group of five young Norwegians who interpreted the genre as if they were born in tango's birthplace on the shores of the Rio de la Plata, the wide river shared by Argentina and Uruguay where the genre first developed in the late 19th century.

Piazzolla's grandson, drummer Daniel Piazzolla, recreated with other musicians the Electronic Octet, a group his grandfather put together in the 1970s that shook the dust off a musical culture that had been stuck in the early 20th century. The elder Piazzolla's masterwork "Adios Nonino," combining his form of the accordion with jazz and dance, was restaged by choreographer Ana Maria Stekelman, who also served as a judge in the dance final.

In all, more than 2,000 artists converged on Buenos Aires for the two-week cultural festival, which celebrated its 10th year this Argentine winter. Art exhibits, book readings, oral histories, and master classes offered free to the public by eight of the previous winning couples were among the highlights.

"This is an event which constantly offers surprises, bringing together the most exciting examples of the genre and betting on crossing over to new generations," said Gustavo Mozzi, the event's artistic director.

A total of 491 couples from 32 countries competed, with a final 42 pairs reaching Monday night's final in the Salon Tango competition.

Each man wore the couple's number pinned to the back of an elegant suit as he twirled a partner in a dazzling dress and high heels around the stage in the Luna Park stadium. Competition rules require the couple to maintain physical contact while the music plays, while moving constantly in a counter-clockwise direction. Acrobatic swoops, swirls and passionate clutches are encouraged, but must be contained within the precise style of traditional tango: the competitors may not lift their legs above their knees.

Sixteen pairs from around the world challenged the Argentines in the Salon final, including three couples from Russia, two from Colombia and two from the U.S. The other finalists made it from Belgium, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Singapore, Uruguay and Venezuela.

After Monday night's Salon Tango final comes Tuesday's final in the Stage Tango competition, which invites dancers to incorporate other dance forms.

Star Trek fans rescue EnterpriseD bridge, plan to restore it to former glory

A trio of Star Trek: The Next Generation fans have rescued the junked remains of the Enterprise-D bridge from Paramount Pictures, with an eye to restoring it to its former glory. The fibre glass set was built for Star Trek: The Experience, after the original (wooden) set was unsurprisingly destroyed filming Star Trek: Generations. When the group knows how much the project will cost, they'll go to Kickstarter to raise funds, with the hope of exhibiting the set to the public. If you feel you might well-up at the sight of your childhood heroes' home lying in pieces in a parking lot, we advise you not to click on the gallery below, and instead kick in a couple of bucks when their appeal goes live.

Five things to watch at the Republican Convention

Will Hurricane Isaac, Sarah Palin, or Joe Biden be the biggest gate crasher at the GOP convention in Tampa? And who could steal the show as a speaker? Here?s a brief look at what could be a wild week in Tampa.

1. What?s up with potential Hurricane Isaac?

The current Tropical Storm Isaac is heading toward the Gulf of Mexico after cruising over Cuba and possibly hitting southern Florida this weekend.

The only experts who are as occasionally off-base as political pundits are meteorologists, so the drama over Isaac could linger into Monday.

If you are a weather geek, the smart money is on the European model over the GFS model, but the two popular weather predictors seem close to agreeing that Isaac is likely heading toward the area of western Florida?s border with Alabama. Tampa will be affected but a convention washout isn?t likely.

2. Who is the biggest gate crasher?

That would seem to be Vice President Joe Biden, who was scheduled to lead rallies in Tampa on Monday and Tuesday, at least before Isaac came on the scene.

Sarah Palin wasn?t invited to speak at the Republican National Convention, and she is not on the list of speakers at an official Tea Party rally on Sunday headlined by Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann.

Palin?s PAC reportedly booked hotel space in Tampa, but that was before the former Alaska governor decided not to attend the convention. It remains to be seen if she will appear in Tampa.

Todd Akin,? the controversial Senate candidate from Missouri, was also reportedly in Tampa this week to meet with fundraisers, but he agreed to not attend the convention after last weekend?s media frenzy.

3. Will Chris Christie steal the show as the keynote speaker?

The boisterous New Jersey governor says he?s not changing his style for his keynote speech. But there is plenty of other speaker firepower in Tampa.

Ted Cruz, the up-and-coming Senate candidate from Texas, will get a lot of attention. And Marco Rubio, the current U.S. senator from Florida, is another dynamic speaker.

Cruz is speaking Monday night, while Rubio is speaking on Thursday night just before Mitt Romney. Christie speaks on Tuesday.

But Wednesday night should be the most dynamic night for speakers, with a lineup that includes John McCain, Jeb Bush, Luis Fortuno, Tim Pawlenty, Condoleezza Rice, and Paul Ryan.

Look for Condoleezza Rice to steal the night with her well-honed speech on returning America to its values and promise.

4. Will the party walk the plank with its platform?

Because of Todd Akin?s miscues about rape in a TV interview, the GOP?s stance on abortion will get a lot of attention as it is codified in the convention?s platform.

The platform is approved at the convention?s start. It is expected to disavow a legal exception for rape or incest victims in abortion situations. That would conflict with Mitt Romney?s view on the issue.

But a report from Fox News on Friday listed some other platform highlights, such as a commission to study the gold standard and some conciliatory language on immigration.

The platform isn?t a binding a document for Romney and Paul Ryan, and there?s a lot of debate if voters really care about it.

One voter who doesn?t is Chris Christie, who told a New York radio station that the platform isn?t a big deal.

?I don?t really care about the platform. And I don?t think most Republicans care about the platform. And I don?t think most Republicans can tell you what the platform said,? Christie said.

5. How much of the convention will be on TV?

In past decades, a lot of the convention was televised live. But in the 24/7 news era, where the convention appears on television is an issue.

You?ll be able to watch most of the convention live on cable news networks and online.

But the major broadcast TV networks plan to show limited coverage on three nights, with ABC, CBS, and NBC showing one hour on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The networks are skipping Monday night.

The GOP might move Ann Romney?s speech to Tuesday, from its scheduled spot as the final speech on Monday, to get her some time on broadcast TV.

The networks are claiming they can only show three nights of coverage, since the Democratic convention only has three nights of events, and there is a fairness issue involved.

Skeptics say the networks gain more financially from showing repeat episodes of TV programming like Castle or Grim than showing Monday?s convention.

The X-factor is the presence of potential Hurricane Isaac on Monday, which could expand a lot of coverage of events in Tampa.

Change Management Gotcha's | Horizontal Change Management

A borrowed title from a post by Connie Moore of Forrester entitled: ?Gotcha?s for Change Management for Business Process Improvement?.

The Five gotcha?s- middle management, unions, talent management, change prioritization and tying downsizing to process improvement- from her post came from panelists:

Connie added the need for a communication plan as her own choice.

This is an interesting list.

Middle Management- always the scapegoat gotcha stakeholders. Loss of power was the primary reason stated for pushback from this group. Involving them is the suggested approach. OK simple change management. Would they be involved in reducing the power they are worried about? No worry about change is unfounded?

Unions- another great scapegoat. ?Change management gets harder in environments with unions?, from the article. Would that be because unions force transparency, collaboration and dialogue? (my question). ?I have seen process transformation and change work successfully in a union shop, but it required a closely aligned working relationship between business execs, the HR exec, and the CIO?, from the article. The change was going to work without that? (me again).

Talent Management- this one might make it on my list. The suggested approach of software based Six Sigma building makes me question its addition. I don?t know much about green belts and black belts as change agents, but on the surface it sounds like preparation for war?

Change Prioritization- this one is a good one too. ?Not sure if makes it to a gotcha list. Prioritize and reduce was the suggestion. Combine could be added. Most of the engagements I am on have potential for combining (and therefore reducing) at the same time. Beware though- ?reduce? is a synonym for ?eliminate?.

Keep process improvement separate from downsizing- process improvement should free up resources. If you do not have an outlet for that resource to fill- growth, another initiative, some new innovation- then you have too many resources. Wouldn?t that be downsizing? With change it is usually better to be honest than sneaky. Separating the two might play out as sneaky.

Connie added a communication plan. Again simple change management. ??communication, communication, communication? is the single most important part of change management?s success or failure.? from the article. If we are talking about the communication necessary to collaborate yes. ?Never too much communication? is an urban myth that refuses to die. You absolutely CAN over-communicate. Tons of something not so good does not make it any better (it just makes more not so good).

I picked on them a little.

It is a good list and certainly a good list to start dialogue. It is also a surprisingly mixed list (strategy, stakeholder connection, competency focus with a dash of culture) which gets big kudos.

Just make sure your own gotcha list pays attention to where change is going, who will be involved (and what skills are needed), how the structure of the organization will help or not and whether you really? have the resources necessary to get change to happen.

What strategic methods are available to reduce injuries in industrial ...

Leading Paragraph:?

Setting up an industrial facility can be complicate since there are human, mechanical and functionality aspects that we have to address time and time again.

Setting up an industrial facility can be complicate since there are human, mechanical and functionality aspects that we have to address time and time again. It is vital to invest on quality more than anything else since we want to make sure that we make the best output and on top of that, be able to come up with resolutions against physical injuries to workers. Let us look at some of the best design and strategic methods to make industrial and commercial facilities more functional and reliable.
Mechanical aids
One of the best ways to eliminate chances of musculoskeletal disorders is to adopt mechanical aids into the work setting. There are numerous types of mechanical aids such as tuggers or car movers, conveyer systems, lift tables, powered trucks and slides. All these devices will cost a considerable amount of money but that money is money well spent if you invest on the right products. The mechanical aids must be able to reduce physical risks on people while at the same time, increase productivity in the workshop. You have to take into account the importance of mechanical aids and how choosing the right one can improve business processes.
Adjusting weight and load requirements
Another way to improve safety and security in any facility is to adjust the amount of load that can be carried per travel. Always purchase the right Cart Movers for your business. Remember that not all movers are designed to carry anything. There are movers that are only capable of withstanding 1000 lbs. of weight while some can carry up to 5000 lbs. thus, it is important to survey the items and materials that you usually need to do certain tasks. Do you need to buy tuggers that carry 5000 lbs. or can you live with a basic one at 1000 lbs. capacity? That is the best strategy that you can consider to further reduce injuries in the work place.
Adjusting distance issues in the workshop
If your storage facility is yards away from the actual work area, you might want to adjust the distance by moving the storage area to the closest possible distance. If there are several work areas, make sure that the storage is equidistant to all areas of the facility. This reduces risks of carrying heavy items too much. While the Cart Movers can reduce the effort you make by an astounding number, you should also recognize that you still exert effort to move items so take care of your options.
Improving push and pull mechanisms across high traffic areas
Instead of moving in a flat, uneven surface, it is ideal to create a ramp that is slightly angled, ensuring that you can leverage effectively and that the Cart Movers can smoothly work across the facility while limiting risks that could happen in the long run. Focus on adjusting the surface where the Cart Movers often is used. This will help improve the timing and address any risk related to the push and pull aspects.
