Fri, 28 Dec 2012 04:16:54 -0800 Heavy Snow Blankets Southern Illinois http://pafecib.posterous.com/heavy-snow-blankets-southern-illinois http://pafecib.posterous.com/heavy-snow-blankets-southern-illinois

FIRST PERSON | WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- In a year of severe weather, including a drought that left the local area devastated, a winter storm has so far dumped six inches of snow with more still falling here in southern Illinois.

As of 8 a.m. local time, there was still a blizzard watch for the area until noon with snow in the forecast until at least 4 p.m. Authorities are advising everyone except for emergency workers to stay off of the roads until the storm passes.

The snow began falling locally a little after 10 p.m., though the winds, gusting up to 35mph, had begun in the early evening. The heaviest snow began to fall at 2 a.m. Visibility was so poor that venturing away from the house would leave you in a swirling haze of snow with winds inhibiting your ability to find your way back.

While visibility has improved considerably, the blowing snow alone makes for hazardous driving conditions. I live on a normally busy street and there are no signs anyone has attempted to venture out thus far.

There are currently no reports of power outages or downed limbs. The best course of action at this point is to stay inside and allow nature to take its course and then allow clean-up workers to do their jobs.

Local message boards have been speculating that the local area is in for a winter with far more snow than usual. The National Weather Service has projected that the winter will be colder than normal and that the area should be out of the drought before the farmers start spring planting. This doesn't bode well in an area that is 29 inches low on precipitation due to the drought but only averages eight inches of snow each winter!

Mon, 17 Dec 2012 14:24:09 -0800 UW-Bothell makes room for play | HeraldNet.com - Local news http://pafecib.posterous.com/uw-bothell-makes-room-for-play-heraldnetcom-l http://pafecib.posterous.com/uw-bothell-makes-room-for-play-heraldnetcom-l

Published: Monday, December 17, 2012, 12:01 a.m.

BOTHELL -- A new sports and recreation complex has opened at the University of Washington's Bothell campus.

The $3.3 million complex covers 2.5 acres and is located behind Campus Way NE, next to the North Creek bicycle trail and campus wetland. It includes a shared soccer and softball field, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court and a basketball court.

Construction began in June and a grand opening was held earlier this month. It is scheduled to be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

The sports and recreation complex was funded by student activity fees and building fees. It's for student use although UW-Bothell staff and faculty as well as students at Cascadia Community College can pay a quarterly fee to use the field, said Betsy Brown, manager of recreation and wellness for the university. The field is not open to the public.

"This is going to offer students an opportunity to interact with each other at a way that they haven't been afforded at this campus before," she said. "I think it's going to increase school pride and help students stay around and want to be on campus more."

Ali Bulzomi was a sophomore at UW-Bothell and a captain of the university's ultimate frisbee team when she and other captains of sports teams started talking about a sports complex for the campus.

She met with Marilyn Cox, vice chancellor for administration and planning, in September 2009 and shared plans that she and other students had put together.

"I had a spiel written out and a drawing of what it would look like and where it could go," said Bulzomi, who now is a budget analyst at UW-Bothell.

Cox liked the idea but said the complex should include a beach volleyball court, Bulzomi said. It was a joke at the time but the finished complex does include a sand volleyball court.

"It started off as a small thing but it got really big," Bulzomi said. "I love it. I think it's beautiful."

Kevin King, 24, is a junior at UW-Bothell who is studying business administration and serves as the UW-Bothell Associated Student Body president. He's used the complex to play basketball, softball and soccer and is looking forward to seeing it used for intramural sports.

"We're very excited to have had the opening this quarter and to have the students be there and play," he said. "I think we got the sizing down just right. It turned out very well."

Mon, 08 Oct 2012 19:50:10 -0700 U.S., South Korea agree on longer range ballistic missiles http://pafecib.posterous.com/us-south-korea-agree-on-longer-range-ballisti http://pafecib.posterous.com/us-south-korea-agree-on-longer-range-ballisti

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea has reached a landmark agreement with the United States to extend the range of Seoul's ballistic missiles by more than twice the current limit to counter the threat from North Korea, the government said on Sunday.

The move to significantly boost the South's missile capabilities along with development of advanced aerial reconnaissance vehicles is likely to rattle the communist North, which has remained at odds since the 1950-53 Korean War left the peninsula divided.

It may also stoke concern in China, Japan and Russia, parts of which would be within range of the new missiles.

Under the agreement, South Korea can develop missiles up to a range of 800 kms (497 mile) from the current ceiling of 300 kms (186 mile), Chun Young-woo, top secretary to President Lee Myung-bak for foreign and security affairs, told reporters.

He said the United States and South Korea also agreed to maintain the maximum payload for a South Korean-developed ballistic missile at the current level of 500 kilograms (1,102 lbs).

However, if Seoul chose to develop a missile with shorter ranges, it could increase the payload accordingly.

South Korea has also been allowed to develop unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, with an unlimited payload weight if the flying distance is within 300 kilometers.

Seoul has for years sought to extend its missile range to deter the North, which it said had developed missiles that could reach every corner of the country. It also wanted to increase the payload for the UAVs and develop not only reconnaissance UAVs but also combat drones.

"The most important goal for our government to revise the missile guidelines is deterring North Korea's military provocations," Chun said.

Currently, all of South Korea as well as U.S. military installations in Japan and Guam, are within the range of North Korean missile attacks, according to South Korean government data.

In April, North Korea was condemned by the U.N. Security Council after a failed long-range rocket launch. U.S. allies including South Korea deemed it a disguised test for the North to upgrade its ballistic missile technology despite Pyongyang's claim that it was aimed to put a satellite into orbit for peaceful purpose.

Washington had sought to discourage South Korea from developing longer-range ballistic missiles in keeping with a voluntary international arms-control pact known as the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).

Sat, 06 Oct 2012 11:55:52 -0700 Four killed in machete gang attack on Kenyan minister http://pafecib.posterous.com/four-killed-in-machete-gang-attack-on-kenyan http://pafecib.posterous.com/four-killed-in-machete-gang-attack-on-kenyan

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - A gang of youths brandishing machetes attacked a Kenyan cabinet minister at a public meeting and killed his bodyguard before the crowd beat three of the attackers to death, police said on Friday.

Fisheries Minister Amason Kingi was unharmed in the Thursday night incident, which police blamed on a separatist group campaigning for the secession of Kenya's coastal strip.

"We believe these are the people who are coming from the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC). We know they have bad intentions for this region. We know that they are armed to engage in unlawful activities," Aggrey Adoli, the coastal region's police chief, told reporters.

Two of the attackers escaped, Adoli said.

MRC spokesman Mohamed Mraja denied the allegation.

"The police are not telling the truth. We were never involved," he told reporters.

"We know there are politicians who are competing for political seats in the coming elections, and are even enemies with each other. They are targeting to outdo one another using any means including sending of militia to disrupt one another's meetings. When this happens it is blamed on MRC."

Mraja's group has unnerved investors in the region, heavily dependent on tourism, by threatening to disrupt March elections if its demands for secession are rejected by Kenyan authorities.

Last month more than 100 people were killed as tribes fought over land, adding to fears of serious unrest ahead of the polls.

Nearly a quarter of Kenyans expect a presidential vote in March to be marred by post-election violence, an opinion poll showed on Friday.

Mon, 01 Oct 2012 23:07:52 -0700 BlackBerry maker still under a cloud http://pafecib.posterous.com/blackberry-maker-still-under-a-cloud http://pafecib.posterous.com/blackberry-maker-still-under-a-cloud

Thorsten Heins, Research in Motion CEO, discusses the launch of its newest device and how it will become a game changer in the smartphone wars.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

Once left for dead, BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) is showing signs of life.

Late Thursday the company surprised Wall Street by issuing a better-than-expected earnings report for the second quarter. Yes, RIM posted another huge quarterly loss, but the damage was not as bad as many had feared.

That news has given investors something to feel optimistic about, driving the company?s share price up 6 percent since Friday morning, recouping some of the 90 percent plunge RIM?s share price has seen since hitting a recent peak in February 2011.

Is RIM back from the brink? Analysts say the Canadian technology company may have shown it still has a pulse, but the prognosis for the company remains as grim as a Canadian winter.

The better-than-expected report gives RIM ?some breathing room,? noted Mike Abramsky, principal at Red Team Global, telling CNBC that the good quarterly results don?t ?diminish the huge uphill battle? that RIM still has to face.

RIM holds the dubious distinction of being the most troubled smartphone maker -- in worse shape than even Finland?s Nokia. Both companies were once industry leaders, but have since seen their market shares and revenue crushed by the popularity of Apple?s iPhone and phones that run on Google?s Android software.

RIM said Thursday it is still losing market share in North America, but has gained new subscribers in developing markets, such as South Africa and India.

The growth in RIM?s subscribers may appear to be a positive development, but many of those new subscribers were acquired by selling RIM?s devices at a discount -- a strategy that is ?not sustainable in the long term,? said Will Power, a senior analyst at Robert W. Baird who covers wireless companies.

RIM may have acquired new subscribers with its older products, but a sustainable future for the company depends on the successful adoption of a new version of its once-ubiquitous BlackBerry, which is due for release in the first quarter of 2013.

That appears to be a formidable challenge for the company, analysts say, given that smart phone users have already switched to Apple?s iPhone and Samsung?s Galaxy, particularly in North America and Europe.

Appearing on CNBC Friday, RIM?s CEO Thorsten Heins touted the company?s newest device, saying it will be a game changer in the smartphone wars.

?There are many more steps to come before we launch BlackBerry 10,? Heins said. ?Then I think the market will be very excited by what BlackBerry 10 has to show, and what it will deliver to its customers.?

New devices coming
Heins offered some clues about the capabilities of the new devices, saying he thinks they will win back customers. The new BlackBerry will have a ?fantastic keyboard,? he said, and will allow users to run both applications for corporate and personal use, but still maintain RIM's famed?high level of security for corporate e-mail.

The strength of security in BlackBerry?s network remains a core competitive strength for RIM, and it could well be a reason for device shoppers to buy a BlackBerry 10 over a new Android phone, or Apple?s iPhone 5, said Red Team Global?s Abramsky.

It is ?still the most secure solution in the market place,? he said, adding that BlackBerry?s physical keyboard is one of the areas where RIM ?still has a unique cachet.?

?I don?t understand why they?re not pushing that,? Abramsky said.

There are still reasons to be hopeful about RIM, he added, noting that ?80 million subscribers is nothing to shake a stick at.?

But by continuing to challenge the dominant industry players, such as Apple and Samsung, there is a ?delusional aspect? to the company?s outlook, he said.

?It shows they are not positioning themselves for future success,? he said. ?RIM is not Apple by any state of the imagination.?

One direction for RIM to take might be to be acquired by another company, but Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette thinks time may be running out for RIM.

?[RIM] might be a motivated seller, but I don?t think there are a lot of motivated buyers out there,? he said. ?We think a lot of people are taking a look at it and taking a pass,? he added, noting that as the smart phone industry develops there will be ?fewer buyers, not more.?

Mon, 01 Oct 2012 21:15:08 -0700 Amaya, Not Zynga, Buys Online Poker Business ... - The Next Web http://pafecib.posterous.com/amaya-not-zynga-buys-online-poker-business-th http://pafecib.posterous.com/amaya-not-zynga-buys-online-poker-business-th

Although social gaming juggernaut Zynga was reportedly ?leading the race? in a bidding war for online poker provider Ongame Network just a few months ago, Amaya Gaming Group has ended up winning it.

The Montreal, Canada-headquartered gaming company this morning announced that it has acquired Ongame from Internet gambling powerhouse Bwin.party for 25 million euros (just south of $33.3 million).

The company coughed up more than expected for the leading B2B online poker network, but will only fork over 15 million euros ($19.3 million) in cash on completion of the deal (expected to occur in Q4 2012). Additional payments of up to 10 million euros ($12.9 million) will become payable only if there is regulated online gaming in the United States within the next five years.

Ongame?s management will transition to Amaya along with the business.

Not familiar with Ongame? Here?s what they do, according to their website:

Ongame is the world?s leading B2B online poker provider, serving partners including bwin, Betfair, Betsson and Unibet. Reaching over 20 million customers in more than 25 markets, with an international network licensed in Gibraltar, as well as regional networks in Italy and France.

Ongame is the premier choice for sportsbook operators, providing a poker environment optimized for recreational players and a proven track record of increasing partner revenues.

Ongame claims P5, the game engine powering its poker offering, is the ?most advanced poker engine ever designed?.

Worth noting: gambling table and slot machine maker Shuffle Master had already agreed and announced that it would be purchasing Ongame for up to $38.9 million in cash back in February 2012, but it dropped those plans at the end of June.

Amaya certainly seems like a better fit. The company provides a host of services and solutions that range from online gaming platforms, online and mobile casino games, traditional and mobile lotteries, networked electronic gaming systems and more for the regulated gaming markets.

Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:26:30 -0700 3.4 magnitude quake rattles Dallas, Texas, suburb http://pafecib.posterous.com/34-magnitude-quake-rattles-dallas-texas-subur http://pafecib.posterous.com/34-magnitude-quake-rattles-dallas-texas-subur

DALLAS A minor earthquake and an aftershock minutes later rattled the western suburbs of Dallas overnight, but authorities reported no damages or injuries and a major airport close to the epicenter continued with normal flight operations.

An initial quake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 3.4 struck at 11:05 p.m. CDT Saturday and was centered about 2 miles north of the Dallas suburb of Irving, the US Geological Survey's national earthquake monitoring center in Golden, Colo., reported. USGS Geophysicist Randy Baldwin told The Associated Press from Colorado that the initial quake lasted several seconds and appeared strong enough to be felt up to 15 or 20 miles away.

He said a smaller aftershock at an estimated 3.1 magnitude occurred about four minutes later, just a few miles from the first temblor in an area west of Dallas.

The Colorado center's online reporting system received more than 1,200 online responses from people who felt the ground shudder. "Of all the reports we've received there were no intensities of a damaging nature. We haven't heard of any kind of damage and it's probably too small for that," Baldwin added.

Authorities in Irving said they were still checking their area early Sunday but had no immediate reports of any significant impact.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport continued operations normally even as the quake surprised those at the airport partially located in Irving's city limits, airport public affairs officer David Magana said. He told AP said the airport, which bustles at peak hours because of 1,800 daily departures and arrivals, was in a quiet period with very little air traffic late Saturday night.

But he said those at the airport definitely felt the ground shake.

"I wouldn't call it panic. I would call it surprise," Magana said.

He said members of the airport operations team inspected landing strips, buildings and other airport installations but reported no damage.

"There were no impacts or outages and no disruptions to flights," Magana said. "I felt it at my house. It shook it a little bit but it wasn't enough of a jolt to shake anything loose like you have in California. I've been in California and this was nothing like that."

Some reports in Dallas said the rattling was felt for many blocks all around Irving, beginning lightly and ending with a jolt. One person reported the quake was strong enough to knock open some file cabinets.

Baldwin said more aftershocks are possible Sunday, noting the region has been periodically rattled by small quakes including a swarm of minor temblors in 2008. He also said preliminary magnitude estimates of the quake and aftershock could be revised after further study of the data because the seismological station is located about 65 miles from the initial epicenter, somewhat distant for precise readings.

7 Ways Information Systems Impact Customer Relationships in Auto Repair

Do you like this story?

Information systems can have a significant impact on customer relationships. Several points in the customer relationship cycle occur through information systems. In some cases the impact is through presentation while in others it involves interactive information exchange. At whatever degree this occurs, the relationship with the customer is affected. If information systems reinforce the basis for the relationship the impact will be positive. The following key points should be evaluated when considering the impact of information systems on customer relationships:

?

  1. Document Presentation ? All documents provided to the customer impact their perception of the business. Quotes, invoices and statements are examples of documents the customer receives. Any document that?s given to a customer influences their perception of the company. All documents should reflect the basis of the relationship between customer and service provider.
  2. Lube Stickers ? These can be one of the most powerful marketing tools available to an auto repair shop. They serve as reminders to ensure proper vehicle maintenance while reinforcing the relationship between the vehicle owner and the repair shop.
  3. Service Due Reminders ? Email reminders to a customer reminding them that preventive maintenance service is due on their vehicle provide a valuable service to the vehicle owner. The customer is reminded to have services performed that keep the vehicle safe and reliable reducing the cost of ownership.
  4. Appointment Reminders ? Reminding a customer of a scheduled appointment is an important service that a shop management system can provide especially if the appointment was made a several weeks or months in advance.
  5. Marketing Correspondence ? Sending emails to customers for special events can have a significant impact on customer relationships. Special emails can be sent for birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. Also special events and offerings at the shop can be communicated.
  6. Interactive Website Processing? Many shops have options for customers to request quotes or make appointments through their websites. This can make things a lot easier for customers as they can do this when they have time available.
  7. Integrated Status Notification ? Software systems often have integrated email processing that allows the shops to send an email or text message to a customer notifying them that their vehicle is ready for pick up. They can also support sending documents to customers such as quotes, invoice or statements.

Sat, 29 Sep 2012 22:43:28 -0700 Khalil s Picks (28 September 2012) http://pafecib.posterous.com/khalil-s-picks-28-september-2012 http://pafecib.posterous.com/khalil-s-picks-28-september-2012

Today, we have the cool edition of Picks. Geology becomes cool thanks to seashells, bacteria reach new cool levels because they control water?s freezing point, a supernova from a thousand years ago did not give birth to any stars (I?ve decided that this is cool), DNA sequencing in schools should make science even cooler. And more cool stuff.

Very cool indeed.

?

Alex Kasprak, in The Sieve, makes geology and a line graph look cooler than Curiosity on Mars. From where I stand, that?s quite something. Alex explains how seashells are actually history books which recount how our planet?s climate changed oh-so-many years ago. I highlighted this piece in my review of Johns Hopkins University?s The Sieve on his blog, but here it is again? top of the pile.

The Revolution Will Be Clumpy

Geologists are able to tell you the exact history of the waxing and waning of glaciers over the past five million years because microscopic creatures in the ocean have been unwittingly recording this dance in their shells. Their shells are made from the carbon and oxygen found in seawater. As glaciers form, seawater is removed from the ocean and trapped on land, resulting in subtle changes in the chemistry of the ocean. These changes are recorded in the shells, which create a detailed history as they pile up on the ocean floor.

Ideal for Reddit?s TIL (Today I Learned) subthread/subreddit, Seeder El-Showk in his blog, Inspiring Science, has a piece about bacteria and water?s freezing point. Better put: how bacteria actually dictate the freezing point of water. Even better put: water?s freezing point is not 0C if it isn?t contaminated.

The bacteria that make it rain

Strange as it may seem, water doesn?t actually freeze at zero degrees. In fact, even at temperatures as cold as -10?C, water still needs help turning into ice. Living creatures of all stripes have learned to take advantage of this curious fact in different ways, though none have done so with quite as much style as bacteria.

Joel Winston, in Wired.co.uk, has a piece about some cool science not being done by scientists. Synthetic biology in the garage type of thing.

Amateur scientists build Lego-style synthetic BioBricks in public lab

While some may believe that science is better left to scientists, hundreds of amateur biologists around the world have been setting-up makeshift biology labs in their homes, garages and community centres. Some of these ?biohackers? or ?DIY biologists? have political motivations to open up science for all, a few attempt to address an absence of research in rare genetic diseases, some are curious and have a desire to learn, while others are taking part just for the sheer fun of it all.

Eric Sawyer, in his Scitable blog, Bio 2.0, says that with technologies becoming more and more affordable?think DNA sequencing?schools and universities should invest in them for undergraduate education. Eric argues that with better technologies, undergrads can do much cooler and interesting lab experiments which should increase interest in science.

Cheaper Genomes Should Enhance Undergraduate Education

Some things in science are just intrinsically expensive. Digging kilometers-long tunnels filled with high vacuum and superconducting magnets will forever be out of the reach of amateur scientists and universities alike. But some technologies start off appearing intrinsically expensive and rapidly cheapen to the point of becoming widely available. The first computers were enormous machines that required a dedicated team of personnel, but now many of us carry one around in our pocket. DNA sequencing must at first have looked like an intrinsically expensive technology, but today it could not be clearer that DNA sequencing is much more like computing than high energy physics. The cost of sequencing a human genome has fallen at a staggering rate over the last decade (just look at the graph). In fact, the rate of innovation in the DNA sequencing community far exceeds Moore?s Law. If DNA sequencing did follow Moore?s Law, with the cost of sequencing a genome being cut in half every 18 months, sequencing a human genome would today still cost millions.

When a star explodes to form a supernova, new stars form from the deathbed. But, as Kelly Oakes explains in her Scientific American blog, Basic Space, a thousand years ago, a supernova ?lived and died fast, leaving no companion star behind.?

Supernova 1006 lived fast and left no companion behind

A supernova that lit up the skies in the year 1006 lived and died fast, leaving no companion star behind, astronomers have found. The result is the latest clue in a puzzle that has been troubling astronomers for some time ? how does this type of stellar explosion happen? Supernova 1006 exploded, as seen from Earth, in the year 1006 (hence the name). It was probably the brightest star ever visible to humans and could have been bright enough to read by at night . Astronomers know that it was a type Ia supernova ? a particular type of stellar sticky end that involves taking another star along for the ride.

Jordan Gaines writes about a paper which details the life of a 86-year old woman with B?lint?s syndrome. B?lint?s syndrome comprises neuropsychological impairments which completely distorts a sufferers? visual field and affects any hand movement which requires vision. (Raise your hand and touch your computer screen. That?s nearly impossible to do for someone afflicted with B?lint?s syndrome.)

Sight without seeing: B?lint?s syndrome

So begins a paper published this past week in Neurology: ?It was a quiet Thursday afternoon when ?A.S.?, a 68-year-old woman from a suburb of Chicago, awakened from a nap to the realization that something was terribly wrong.? What?! What?s wrong! Must?keep?reading? As the article continues, we learn how A.S. and another patient, J.D., adjust to their lives before and after their diagnoses of B?lint?s syndrome.

Walden Media

Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal in "'Won't Back Down."

By David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

The jury is still out on a solution to the national education system crisis, but the verdict is delivered with a heavy hand and a stacked deck in the formulaic "Won?t Back Down." Simplifying complex school-reform hurdles into tidy inspirational clich?s while demonizing both teachers? unions and bureaucracy-entrenched education boards, the movie addresses timely issues but eschews shading in favor of blunt black and white. It?s old-school Lifetime fodder dressed up in Hollywood trappings.

In the broadest terms, Daniel Barnz?s film, co-written with Brin Hill, is a dramatized counterpart to Davis Guggenheim?s 2010 documentary "Waiting for Superman,? which pointed to charter schools as the only way out of the public-education quagmire. That film was partly financed by Walden Media, the backers of this Fox release, suggesting that the problem of underperforming inner-city classrooms is a pet cause for the company.

VIDEO: "Won't Back Down" trailer

In Barnz and Hill?s by-the-numbers screenplay -- which trumpets that vaguest of catch-all legitimization banners, ?Inspired by actual events? -- the catalyst for much-needed change at Adams Elementary School in Pittsburgh is crusading Everymom Jamie Fitzpatrick (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Her dyslexic daughter Malia (Emily Alyn Lind) is stuck in a class with a teacher (Nancy Bach) who is a monster of job-secure complacency, and a principal (Bill Nunn) too mired in unionized paralysis to help.

A single mother working two jobs and unable to afford tuition at better alternatives, Jamie bones up on the ?fail-safe? maneuver, the film?s equivalent of the parent trigger law. That controversial legislation -- on the books in some form in a handful of states and under consideration in many others -- allows concerned parents and teachers to intervene in floundering public schools. In the film?s example, it primarily means getting past restrictive union controls and a do-nothing education board.

The absurd idea that the parents of an entire student body are too apathetic to worry about their kids? education until Jamie comes along like some rocker-chick Erin Brockovich is just one of the film?s condescendingly movie-ish conceits. Played with grating one-note pluckiness by Gyllenhaal, Jamie overcompensates for her lack of a college education by self-consciously sprinkling her conversations with words like ?trepidatious.? Yet, darned if this scrappy dynamo doesn?t get the whole community galvanized.

Even more objectionable is the depiction of the burned-out staff at Adams. They mill around in the break room bitching about teachers like Malia?s, saying, ?The only thing the district does well is protect its mistakes.? But the general lack of motivation is palpable, and even Nona Alberts (Viola Davis), a committed educator like her mother before her, has lost faith in her profession.

The only exception at Adams appears to be Teach For America do-gooder and soulful hunk Michael Perry (Oscar Isaac), who leads his class in line-dancing numbers, accompanying them on ukulele as they sing about ?Goin? to College.? Naturally, this makes Jamie swoon.

A perfunctory romance blooms, but Michael vacillates in his support for Jamie?s cause. Preferring to focus his commitment on his class only, he is reluctant to stray from union-sanctioned guidelines. Jamie?s sole consistent ally is Nona, who risks alienating the entire teaching staff, including her feisty pal Breena (Rosie Perez). While she?s worn down by the challenges of a broken system, not to mention the end of her marriage and the learning difficulties of her own son (Dante Brown), Nona reluctantly gets with the empowerment program.

However, this is another one of those movies where a tenacious white person leads the charge to save inner-city kids, achieving a miracle transformation through sheer force of will. While Nona is the insider with the education experience, she?s second fiddle throughout the fight, getting much of her dignity not from the script but from Davis, who could do this role in her sleep.

In order to provide a gossamer-thin semblance of balance, Barnz and Hill plant one jaded idealist apiece in the teachers? union and the education board. That essentially leaves Holly Hunter and Marianne Jean-Baptiste playing variations on the same role, both of them primed for redemption as they rediscover their buried convictions. Elsewhere, the opposition is reduced -- most notably by Ned Eisenberg?s belligerently uncompromising union chief -- to a force of obstinate blindness as to what?s good for the kids, and for the majority of disillusioned teachers.

Given the disingenuous way in which this lumbering movie pushes obvious buttons and manipulates the audience?s emotional investment while conveniently skimming the issues, it?s a mystery how some of these names got roped in.

Following her breakout work in "The Help," this is a particularly unhappy use of Davis? considerable talents. Hunter also is too smart an actor to be stuck playing the transparent construct of a compromised Norma Rae. Lance Reddick (The Wire) is given an entirely thankless role as Nona?s businesslike departing husband, while Ving Rhames is on hand literally to deliver a speech as principal of the exemplary Rosa Parks Elementary School during a lottery draw for new students.

That scene is one of many such preachy interludes in a dumbed-down agenda film that veers shamelessly between didacticism and soap.

Sat, 29 Sep 2012 18:50:04 -0700 Several Considerations to Buy Fishing Boats http://pafecib.posterous.com/several-considerations-to-buy-fishing-boats http://pafecib.posterous.com/several-considerations-to-buy-fishing-boats Fishing is a great recreational activity, especially for water sport enthusiasts who want to get out of the busy world of everyday life. Not only that it is fun, it can also be a recreational activity for the whole family. It does not matter what your fishing angle is, if you are a water sport enthusiast and consider fishing as a fun outing, you should really consider buying fishing boats.

Since there is a wide array of varieties of fishing boats, doing a little research, before actually buying them, will help you get into terms with the first time amazement. Try surfing through the internet to get the details of boats and places selling them. Try asking yourself a question of purpose and preference. Are you a fresh water fisherman? Or do you prefer chasing fish in the open sea? For fresh water fishing, you may prefer an aluminum fishing boat, or fiberglass fishing boat, a runabout or walleye, or even a canoe. However, if you are into saltwater fishing, you may want to prepare a little more money to get a better equipped boat.

For saltwater fishing enthusiasts, you may want to browse a specific directory of saltwater fishing boats. There are two big divisions when browsing the directory of saltwater fishing: the inshore fishing boats and the offshore fishing boats. Inshore fishing boats are less expensive and less durable in material elements. It is designed for those who are not into deep sea fishing or open ocean fishing. The largest boat in this division is 25 feet and it should do the job well. On the other hand, for offshore fishing boats, you might need to prepare a more budget as you need to ensure that the boat is capable of handling deep sea monsters and Mother Nature punishment through waves and heavy weather.

For people who specifically go fishing for bass, there are bass fishing boats. Bass boats boast speed. In addition, a lower position of the boats in the water allows a better chasing procedure. The characteristics of a bass boat are casting platforms both on the bow and stern, and trolling motors. A runabout is, in a way, a more casual pick. People who get a runabout are usually people who see fishing as a casual hobby and want to treat it that way. It is used mostly in lakes or rivers. A runabout fisherman can choose between inward motor and the outward one.

For solitary fisherman, a canoe is the suitable fishing boats. It is light, simple to bring and to use, and it does not consume fuel. If you prefer to go fishing in secrecy, not wanting to make your prey afraid or other people know your secret fishing spot, a canoe is your pick as it has no motor and requires no trailer to carry. If you would like to have the same experience, but with fewer prices, you are suggested considering float tubes. A float tube is a popular fishing vessel with a pontoon, like the flotation device. It is cheaper, but grants you similar fishing experience with a canoe.

For saltwater fishing, you can pick between inshore fishing boats and offshore fishing boats. Both are larger than freshwater boats, and more suitable for the occasions. If you have Inshore fishing boats, it means you like to fish in a shallower area for Tarpin or red-fish. Shallow drafted and lightweight boats and the ones which float higher in the water will make sure that the body of your boat does not scratch the rocks. For an offshore fishing boat, you will need to get one of durable and heavy weight vessels, which are capable of withstanding ocean waves and equipped with fishing machines and plush salons.

Fri, 28 Sep 2012 22:35:53 -0700 Candidate?s wife throws water on reporter http://pafecib.posterous.com/candidates-wife-throws-water-on-reporter http://pafecib.posterous.com/candidates-wife-throws-water-on-reporter

One way to get rid of a pesky reporter: Throw a bucket of water on him.

That's what the wife of a failed candidate embroiled in a campaign scandal did to Miami Local 10 senior political reporter Michael Putney.

The TV journalist came away drenched but not any more enlightened than when he knocked on the door. The caught-on-tape moment has made a splash on the Web.

But the strangest part of the story is that the soggy reporter isn't even the weirdest part. According to the Miami Herald, failed Democratic congressional candidate Justin Lamar Sternad is reportedly telling the FBI that the Republican, Rep. David Rivera, secretly contributed to his campaign?in an apparent failed attempt to plant a ringer candidate in the 25th District's primary election.

Sternad, previously a night-time hotel worker, ultimately lost in the primary.

But during his attempt to run, the father of five who makes just $30,000 a year, was allegedly funneled unreported cash through his campaign manager, Ana Sol Alliegro.

There's more: Sternad reportedly told the FBI that Alliegro acted as a conduit between his campaign and Rivera, whom she referred to as "D.R." and "the Gangster."

Sternad offered as evidence of the connection photos of his campaign manager with Rivera on Facebook and Twitter.

Questions arose when Sternad spent thousands of dollars on expensive mailers.

Rivera's attorney, Michael R. Band, told the Miami Herald, "We will respond when these so-called 'sources' are willing to go on the record." Band added, "We are not going to respond to unfounded rumors and innuendo. My client is in the middle of an election, and it's unfair for us to be shadowboxing with unnamed sources." Alliegro has disappeared from public view.

Certainly a juicy story that any journalist would want to cover, wet or dry.

In the video clip, as the reporter steps up to the Sternad family home, he sees a sign posted on the door that reads, "Have respect! We have 5 small children," and asks the media to direct their inquiries to an attorney. The sign adds, "Trespassers will be WET!"

In fairness, he was warned.
